Every time the avast screen saver cuts in, during the (or immediately after) the screen saver cuts out and a microsoft error reporting window pops up.
the information below is taken from the error report, I can post the whole technical log file if needed but very large. This happens every time even if I preview the screensaver.
That is because the problem is with msvcr71.dll that isn’t an avast file, http://www.google.com/search?q=msvcr71.dll, but a Microsoft® C Runtime Library, v. 7.10.3052.4.
What version of windows are you using and is it fully up to date ?
I assume (I don’t know the inner workings of avast, I’m an avast user like yourself) that with the scan element switched off it wouldn’t need the run time library msvcr71.dll so the faulting module isn’t being used.
I’m having a similar issue. It doesn’t crash but the screen saver won’t start if “scan for viruses” is checked. If box is checked I and I select “preview” from within screen saver, the screen saver starts but then immediately stops. It’s as if the virus scan starting causes the screen saver logic to think that the PC isn’t idle. This started happening within the last week (beginning of Feb 07) so I think it’s related to one of the virus updates since then.
No Dr Watson folders on my System. This is Win2k SP4.
Make sure you are using the latest build of avast! (4.7.1001)
Open the installation folder of avast! (e.g. in Explorer)
Rename the file ashTask.dll to something else (e.g. ashTask.dl_); I suppose you are using Windows NT/2000/XP - if we are talking about Win9x, you’ll have to do it in DOS mode.
