I just installed Avast 5 ( free version ) and it did not generate a screen saver option in my screen saver list. I am using Vista 64 bit o/s. Any suggestions?
I have seen this before where the screen saver from Avast was not installed after a fresh Avast 5 install but I do not know how it was fixed… I have Win 7 X64 with Free Avast and I do have the Avast Antivirus screensaver in my screen savers list.
I assume you tried to deinstall and reinstall (using the deinstall utility) and you still have the problem??
Maybe someone here had the same issue also and remembers how they fixed it?
Gilles,
Yes, I did deinstall and reinstall Avast and I still do not have the Avast screen saver option in my screen saver list.
Thanks
You could try going to Avast Basic Settings, make sure the item “Special Scans” is ticked, then under Scan Computer, locate the Screen Saver scan, open its settings and under Screen Saver note what shows in the “underlying screen saver”. Change this to something different using the pull down list, then click OK. Exit the Avast settings, shut down the computer and then restart it (Cold start, not warm reboot). Once back running recheck for the Avast Screen saver option in your screen saver list.
Tried the proposed changes this morning with same results i.e. no Avast screen saver option in my screen saver list. I also tried de-installing and re-installing Avast as administrator ( Vista ) with same results.
Have you tried asking the question directly to Avast support?
yes … the answers I got back from the Avast support center are at the box checking level. All the boxes are checked as required to initiate the screen saver scan option but the avast screen saver does not appear in my screen saver list when I try to personalize my screen saver in the system’s control panel.
I had this same problem under Vista Ultimate x64. I was able to solve the problem by copying the avastSS.scr file from the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory to the C:\Windows directory.
Tried your solution and it now works fine … thanks for your help
The question now is how do we explain why/how this happened in the first place on a new install of Avast 5 Free AV using Vista x64?? Seems that more than one person had the issue.
I think it’s just a problem with the installer. It likely needs an update for proper placement of the screensaver on 64-bit versions of Windows. I’m sure it will be fixed in a future update.
