Secure Connection Failed

I’m using latest version of Avast and definitions are current. I’m running into an issue that appears time to time over the past few years. With all my browsers (FF 73.0.1, Chrome, and Edge) I’m getting “Secure Connection Failed PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR”. The only way to avoid this is my disabling HTTPS scanning. Why is this?

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Thanks Asyn for replying.

Paid version of Avast Premium Security 19.8.2393 (build 19.8.4257.552). Long time user of Avast products.

This is a new Dell computer which came installed with McAfee. I uninstalled McAfee before installing Avast. When I became aware of this issue (Secure Connection Failed) I examined my PC more thoroughly and found that a McAfee component did not uninstalled by using MS Apps & Features tool. I uninstalled that component and then that’s when my problem began.

I do not use proxy or VPN on this computer. I do not use Avast SecureLine.

The only way I can avoid the problem is by dis-enabling Avast HTTPS scanning in the settings. See screen shot.

Could DNS settings be involved? Support staff for a product I use remotely accessed my computer and possibly he changed a DNS setting that I didn’t observe during the remote session.

Are these the instructions you followed to install Avast?

Thanks bob3160. No, I did not follow those instructions…unaware of them. Looks like Step 2 was critical which I did not do. Any recommendation what I should do at this point? Maybe uninstall Avast with ClearAvast and then use the tool mentioned in Step 2. And then re-install Avast…just guessing!

Chrys

Correct. Totally remove both AV’s and then install Avast.

Following your instructions worked.

Thanks again, bob3160.
