Sensitive Data Shield - How does it work?

Hi, I’ve recently purchased the Avast Internet Security (AIS) product. In it is a Sensitive Data Shield application. I’ve read the FAQ but can’t find how it protects; encrypts, policy, or whatever.
A couple of concerns if I run this and hit protect all.

  1. In general how does it protect? What is it doing to my files?
  2. Can I copy a file to another PC and will it open for them; assuming they have that application like Word or Excel, etc.?
  3. If I remove the AIS product, for any reason, does this inhibit me from opening and using those protected files?
For example I recently had to uninstall AIS and Reinstall in order to get VPN to work properly. In between the removal and reinstall what would have happened to those protected files.
    Thanks, Greg
