Hi i sent in a suspicious attachment to virus@avast.com and i just want to make sure that is made it. The attachment name was virus1 does anyone know if it made it and if it was a virus.
if you wanna make sure that the file you think is infected could be a possible virus, you should try these scanners:
You should try checking the VPS History Here to see if your virus has been added whenever you get an update. (Note: It could be under a different name)
If you zipped and password protected the attachment (so mail scanners on route don’t detect/delete it) and it didn’t bounce back to you it should have got through. However, avast doesn’t currently acknowledge receipt of your email submission.
i used the online scanner jotti before i sent it in and one of the scanners detected it as a virus. I sent it using a different e-mail.
Justin, it is relatively unimportant which email address you use to send it in via just that you send it to ‘virus @ avast . com’ without the spaces.
I would suggest that you remove your email address from what is an open forum for all to see and use/abuse. There even ‘search bots’ (robot software tools) that search the web for what appear to be email addresses to add to spam lists.
Greetings, on a similar but slightly different note to this thread:
I am trying Avast Pro to hopefully replace Norton, which I have been using for years now. I got my hands on a virus laden file (from a common warez site), Norton catches and deletes this everytime. I figured this would make a good test for Avast.
Unfortunately Avast detected nothing upon unzipping the file, nor with a direct scan. Too bad as I was hoping to validate Avast as being as good of a scanner as Norton.
So from reading this thread, if Support doesn’t acknowledge any emails sending in suspected files, how am I to decide whether Avast will secure me as well as Norton?
I guess what I’m asking is if Avast misses this virus, does that mean I should stick with Norton, or is this just an isolated example that Avast will fix and I should be fully confident of Avast & happily uninstall Norton? Any comments?
Thanks
I think I’ve come to the opinion that no AV will save you if you don’t exercise some common sense: don’t download from Warez site, don’t open email attachments, keep your OS up to date and your firewall up.
If you must download from dodgy sites or open attachments, use Jotti’s scanner, and preferably quarantine the file for a few weeks just to have the best chance that any malware it might contain will have been identified.
A good detection rate is important: AV companies need staff working 24/7. If they can’t provide this, they are not doing their job. I’d like to see the avast! team more proactive (I hate that word!) I want to see them nailing viruses ahead of the competition, and Google searches coming up with links to the avast! site.
Sadly, I think other AV companies may have the lead at the moment, but I’m happy to use avast!! with a bit of safe hex thrown in. The best AV available (whatever it may be) cannot offer 100% protection. 5% or so is down to you, whichever AV you choose.
If you have installed avast whilst you still have NAV installed, avast stops some of the elements from being fully installed to avoid conflict. So I don’t know if this might be a contributory factor.
As Frank said also practice safe hex too, limit your exposure, limit the browsers more likely to attract malware (activeX and BHOs are like magnets) and then limit the rights of the software that you use to connect to browse the internet or collect email. Otherwise the malware has the same rights as your user account and can reap havoc if you have administrator rights.
