I got avast Home with this new PC (couple months now) and today I’ve just gone live with broadband (was dial-up) with a new supplier.
Two questions please
Update Connections - I realised Avast hadn’t updated today. I went to the setting Update (Connections) section. I had the “I only connect to the internet with a dial-up modem” selected and of course it was updating fine with dial-up. Am I right in ONLY selecting the “My computer is permanently connected to the internet” now that I have a broadband router set up? I still have the PCI dialup modem installed and intend to keep it of course in case it it’s needed.
SMTP settings - I didn’t have this set at all. I know what my new SMTP server address so I can add that, but do I simply add my new email address in the From address field then fill the authentication details underneath. Is it necessary or useful to have this set up?
No problems, keep the “My computer is permanently connected to the internet” as the only option checked.
It is used to send infected files from Chest to Alwil for analysis.
It won’t harm if you let these settings correctly filled. When you use the Chest and send a file for analysis they will be used.
OK thanks for that. I have done that OK and set the SMTP settings using the SMTP address of my ISP outgoing mail server, the From address is mine, I’ve ticked the SMTP server requires authentication as that is also selected on my Outlook setup. Then I have added my username and password I use to log to my email. If I’m right there, the next bit is in the Alerts section. But selecting SMTP and Test is says Unknown error, alert cannot be sent. Am I misunderstanding something?
what happens if i dont check either of them does auto updates still happen? because im using wireless internet and sometime lose it and have to reconnect.
The difference I have found is that if you tell avast you are permanently connected then avast will assume that the connection is there adn give you a pop-up if it cannot get to the server to update the virus protection.
If you do not make the selection then avast will wait until doomsday (perhaps) to get a connection and you will not be aware that it cannot get updates for the virus protection until it is well out of date.
Does the server address is the same you use into your email program?
Does the port number is the same?
If they’re the same as Outlook or Thunderbird or any other email program… I see no reason for these settings do not work… ???
Yes server address and port number is the same as I use for the email, I just checked with Oulook mail account settings. The server addresses and port numbers will have been automatically set from the ISP’s disc. The port is also the same as the other email accounts I have. Strange eh
I received both the alert and, of course, the email of alert that avast told that sent.
I can only imagine some kind of firewall blocking…
Does this server require SSL (encrypted) connections? (I think not as you’re using port 25).
Server dosn’t require SSL - you are right.
I use the Windows Firewall but don’t know if it is blocking anything - can’t be can it if email works OK using same settings as I put into SMTP setting for Avast.
