A few weeks ago I got a new computer running on Windows 8 (x64) and decided to use avast again since it has served me well in the past.
However, I’ve been experiencing a few strange problems with avast lately.
A few days ago I went to do a quick scan on avast, and when I clicked the button to start it, avast informed me the following: “Unable to scan. There are no endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.”
This rather worried me. I ran checks with Malwarebytes, Spybot and TDSSKiller and none of them found anything.
I then downloaded a new copy avast, but decided to try a reboot first.
After I turned my computer back on, avast showed I was unprotected, then seemed to update itself even though I was offline (sorry I’m a little lost what happened here, I had a bad fever) and said I was secure again.
This still left be worried if avast is actually working right now.
After this scans seemed to work normally.
And today while I went to run a quick scan avast seemed to start it, but after 30 seconds, without actually doing any checks it informed me that my computer was clean.
I tried again and now quick scan seems to be running normally, and once again checks with Malwarebytes, Spybot and TDSSKiller came up without results (ran them before trying with avast).
So, my question is: is this something I should be worried about, or just random glitches?
Is there any way to check if avast is working properly?
Help a worried computer illiterate girl (in trouble?)
Go to the botton left of the screen till the Windows 8 start screen picture appears, then right click and choose Programs and features.
Double click Avast in the list.
In the Window which pops up choose repair and then next.
Ok I finished the quick scan that was running while I wrote my post and it came back with a message that it can’t check all files.
These were the ones it can’t check: http://imgur.com/3WXX6yK
The reason it gave was something like “Defined paths can’t be found.” (That’s probably not 100% accurate since I had to translate it from Finnish, sorry!)
I did the repair and now I’m running another quick check, will report back with the results!
Also, any recommendations on what I should replace Spybot with?
Dont worry about the files that cant be scanned, they are password protected or the system cannot find the path etc…
If you want to buy something you could use Malwarebytes PRO which costs 24.99 dollars for 1 PC LIFETIME LICENSE.
Or you could use Comodo Firewall, which is more an Firewall but it also scans for viruses, BUT THIS COULD GIVE PROBLEMS WITH AVAST.
So i would consider Malwarebytes, also you can get rid of Adware and PUPs with it and its blocking Websites.

avast just did a cleanup in signature folder .... so thats why you get the files not found error
this error is usually gone if you reboot and scan again

did your new computer come with a factory installed trail AV? ..... like Norton / McAfee / TrendMicro
if so, this must be uninstalled. when done it is recomended to run the vendors removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict
Nope, I have none of those programs!
When I bought my laptop I asked it without an AV.
My quick check after the repair is finished and it came up without results.
Is there a way to check if Avast is actually working properly though? I’m just super paranoid about my laptop.
Or should I just stop panicking for no reason?
