VERSION? Does anyone know if the Sharepoint plug-in works with Sharepoint Services 2.0?
LICENSING? I need this for a server on a private LAN with a private IP. Is the plugin licensed per user or per server?
I use Avast on a SBS2003 server. It comes with Sharepoint 2.0. Seems that it’s running fine.
The server’s avast scans files on the Sharepoint database. Then, clients scan sharepoint using the standard web shield, because it is in essence, just another website on the client’s end. Files get scanned as they are downloaded, and uploaded by the avast client on the client’s PC.
if you have 1 server and 25 user (different) connections then you need 25 licenses
its like the exchange plugin, its per mailbox… sharepoint per user connection
the license for the server is to protect the operating system itself.
but if you go to the license calculator you can check the server licensen and you get options for several services plugins (exchange, sharepoint, isa, …)
its also logical to have licenses for sharepoint if you reason like the exchange… for every exchange box you need a license, for every sharepoint user (compare it to exchange box) you need license… and all that NEXT to the license for the server itself.
i assume that if your license doesnt include the sharepoint licenses then the plugin shouldnt work…?

I can only guess that your’e right. I’m looking at my services now, and I have 8 running and 8 installed. None of which are sharepoint.
Which brings me to the other question.
Sharepoint is just a website with data being stored in a back-end SQL server database. Why exactly would you need an actual “plug-in” just to scan sharepoint as you’re accessing it? The web shield would scan the page as soon as you access it, files would be scanned with the resident scanner as you downloaded or uploaded them. The only reason a “plugin” would be needed (in my thoughts anyway) would be for the server, so that it can scan the database as things are changed.
I do understand what you mean about the licensing though, even though you have licenses for outlook, doesn’t mean you can have 10000 clients access exchange, without the appropriate 10000 exchange licenses as well.
I just don’t get why you’d need to run the plugin on client’s computers, that’s all.
you dont run the plugin on client computers, its a server plugin…
the data that gets uploaded on sharepoint cant be trusted since sharepoint can be accessible by outside company users too (depends on how you setup stuff in the netwerk)
my best guess right now is that the sharepoint plugin scans the data (documents) that are uploaded to the sharepoint site before its written in the right places
the webshield is for the client side browser in the point of view for sharepoint
Yeah, I get ya. I can see why MS would require licensing for every user (not external, like customers and such) for sharepoint, but I don’t see why Avast requires user licenses for the sharepoint plugin.
Oh well, not arguing with you, just trying to find the logic of it all.
Hopefully this whole discussion will help out the OP, although it probably just made them even more confused
