Avast user interface > Protection > Core shields reports that all of the 4 listed shields are ON. However if I R-click the Windows 7 tray icon and hover over Avast Shields Control it reports that 1 shield is disabled. Clicking on “enable” does not enable it. Clicking on “disable for…” turns off 4 shields and thel report then says that 5 shields are disabled. “Enable all shields” only enables 4 - 1 is left disabled (or sometimes 2 are left disabled). Never says which. Going to Control Panel > Programs and selecting “repair” does not fix the problem. Neither does uninstalling and re-installing. How do I fix this? I had this same problem with my Windows 10 desktop computer, and doing a repair fixed the problem. But with this Windows 7 laptop, the problem remains.
Confirmed.
See attached below.
I can’t reproduce this on Windows 10, I guess it only affects Windows 7.
Running Windows 10 Home 64-bit as above.
I started to respond to this as I couldn’t replicate the issue and then I realised I had only updated my winXP Pro SP3 system and not this win10 laptop that I was checking it on.
It never ceases to amaze me how a recent to the regular program update stream breaks something that wasn’t broken or reported in the beta session or the last regular program release 18,2,2328. It has got to the point that I don’t update all of my systems right away (only one) and see what happens.
UPDATE: Have just started my winXP Pro SP3 system with avast 18.3.2333 and the Shield Control reports All shields are on.’ So I can’t replicate it.
I’d like to know what the missing shield is tho.
Try checking the Bell icon (Notifications), top right on the main UI page and see if it is reported there or check the AvastUI > Settings > Components.
Yep, seems Sandbox cannot be customised (customise option greyed out), but other than that, nothing obvious.
Since the Sandbox isn’t an option in Avast free, perhaps that is why I’m not impacted by this bug.
I am having this same issue on my Windows 10 machine. Started yesterday (maybe the night before from an update, didn’t notice).
Repair did not work and when I look in the UI all my shields are shown to be working and avast says I am secured. However if I right click the Tray icon avast days 1 shield is disabled and not matter what I do it doesn’t turn on. Maybe a graphical bug from the update?
I’ll get this escalated to the Avast team now but I can’t reproduce this on Windows 10.
My Sandbox is able to be customized so it’s possibly linked to that.
If it helps I do pay for the subbed avast internet security. I am currently not at home so I am not sure about the sandbox settings.
More info below:
A bit odd, disabling Avast reports 8 ! shields disabled if you click disable for 10 minutes. Thought there were only four (maybe five)?
[EDIT:] Question is, which of the 8 is disabled? Avast doesn’t say.
Only 4 reported if I disable for 10 minutes on this XP Pro system with avast free 18.3.2333.
Hi guys, I can’t reproduce the issue here either.
Last night I checked my settings and my sandbox isn’t greyed out so it seems fine on that end. Still dealing with the one shield disabled.
I did read this thread before I update my Avast. Before the update, it says the shields are all on. But after I updated to the latest 18.3.2333 version. It shows 1 disabled.
Behavior Shield does not always come up enabled on cold boot on my XP PRO SP3 computer. It is running a P4 at 1.8Ghz and 2GB of RAM … I need to enable it manually. Works fine on my Windows 10 Home 64 Bit Build 1709 Laptop
I’m posting this on the Developers channel.
Hopefully Avast can give us an answer tomorrow.

Avast has acknowledged the problem and they are working on a fix.
