December 2024. I just installed Avast Premium Security on my brand new Dell Laptop running Windows 11. It keeps telling me my core shields are off. I turn them on in the Core Shields page but when I go back to the Status page they are turned off again. I uninstalled the pre-intalled MacAfee protection product but it didn’t make a difference. Do I need to change my Windows settings as well?
Do you have any other Antivirus or Anti-malware software installed?
If a new laptop, did it come with any Antivirus software which may not have been completely removed?
I uninstalled MacAfee which came pre-installed with a trial subscription. I did not activate the subscription. If it is not completely uninstalled how would I tell? Does Windows 11 come with antivirus protection- I went to the settings page but it was unclear if it was activated or how to deactivate it. Thank you.
Make sure mcafee is no longer present. See this: McAfee Customer Service -- Official Site
Windows includes antivirus “Defender” as standard, but when you install Avast, it will automatically override and take over duties from Windows Defender. You do not need to do anything to Defender.
You could try and Repair Avast by opening the Avast app user interface, then:
Menu>Settings>Troubleshooting scroll down to [Repair App]
Otherwise I would suggest you download a fresh copy of Avast and install again.
Yes, that seemed to work. The repair didn’t work, so I uninstalled both Avast Premium Security and Avast Cleanup and reinstalled Premium by signing in to my account on the Avast webpage and hitting Download. I wonder why it didn’t work the first time? So weird. Happy it is working now, though. I will keep an eye on those Shields to make sure they stay on and try reinstalling Cleanup.
Anyone else having this same problem may want to try the uninstall/reinstall as well.
Thank you, rocksteady for the help.
