Also note that there is no need to install Microsoft C++ Suite ( especially when you don’t know what version is used ??? ) the 2014 versions of avast are compiled with Visual C++2012 but does not need it to be installed nor does it install it.
As mentioned run the removal tool ( tool will ask for permission to reboot to safe mode ) http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe run the tool for all versions of avast ever installed then reboot back to normal mode and try to reinstall a fresh copy of avast.
Heh, I know I’m running 64 bit, but I was becoming desperate to get the program to work as I’m pretty sure I’ve got some malware, so I figured I’d install both just to see.
I’ll use the uninstaller tool when I get home in a bit.
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I am having the same issue. Win8.1 and installed it on my kid’s laptops. No issues on one (laptops are the same), but on the other I am getting the 14001 side by side error. By reading the above I was able to uninstall using avastclear. I did come across the old threads and downloaded the 2008 c+++ packages (which I have since uninstalled).
However when I clear (restart) and install (restart) I still end up with the 14001 error. Help!?
After running the avastclear tool ( repeat for all versions of avast ever installed ) and rebooting I would also suggest running CCleaner including the registry clean function then re-try installing the latest version of avast.
Thanks. I will try that tonight. I downloaded avast 2014 (free version)yesterday morning. The laptop is a month old and never had avast on it. I first installed avast yesterday and I had this issue.
removed avast via avastclear
rebooted and installed/ran ccleaner
rebooted and installed the latest avast Free
rebooted and launched avast… same side by side message.
i did notice that on this laptop after the install process, it prompts the restart… on my other laptop (identical to this one), it allowed me to run a scan right away.
ugh… i am not super techy… i can follow instructions and have a bit of intutiveness… but have run out of patience. i wish i would have backed up a system restore point as soon as we got them last month.
Ugh. i am a glutton for punishment. tried everything again, multiple times. i guess at this point i am going to have to get geeksquad assistance (at a $200 fee - but will also cover all 3 laptops). maybe i should accidentally drop it as i have a protection plan. naahh… i believe in karma waay too much.
honestly, i do think its stupid for avast to install all the way instead of erroring during the install with the error message about the side by side configuration.
Does/did your computer have either Windows Defender or Microsoft Security Essentials?
If it does/did, disable Windows Defender of if it’s MSE uninstall following the instructions found here.
Then do a clean install of avast using the links provided by craigb above.
i dont think so… as mentioned, i have two laptops that are identical. the first one it installed without any issues. the second (which did have some potential malware), is the one that i am having issues with. i am probably gonna take it to best buy tomorrow.
