side by side configuration is incorrect

When I attempt to open a PDF only, I get the error message “application will not start because the side by side configuration is incorrect see application event log for more details”. I am running Vista 32 bit home premium on a Gateway. Adobe reader has been repaired - uninstalled - installed - repaired and currently uninstalled. What should I do I saw the C++2008 reinstall. How do I know that is what I need to do. We do not want to make matters worse. Help. Thanks. Molson Mike

How to know if that is what it is, is difficult to say, but it is the most common cause of this error message being displayed.

If you have seen this in the forums, you will also see that that has resolved it for most people.

I don’t think Adobe reader even comes into this, avast doesn’t require it in fact most suggest that you don’t have it as it is a huge target for malware. I have been using Foxit pdf reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/) for many years without problem. Aside from it being much lighter it a) doesn’t present such a target to malware and b) doesn’t seem to have anywhere near the potential for being exploited.

I don’t know what version you have installed or if you have it installed (?), I have 3 versions on my system, c++ 2005 and two for c++ 2008, the last being a windows update.

I don’t believe there is a way to check it to ensure that it isn’t corrupt, but I would go ahead with a reinstall of the latest version.

The posting I was referring to was posted in the free/pro/suite forum on 9/28/2010 @7:26 am. I believe “Dch48” commmented that Avast!5 installer does not always correctly install the C++2008 files on Vista machines. I just would someone that is more knowledgeable to guide me into the right correction. Thanks.

Clarification - “more knowledgeable than me” Sorry , don’t wish to offend anyone.

  1. Regarding the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package:

To see if you have the Package installed on your machine, look in Add/Remove Programs to see if you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package listed. If not, download the file (see below for links - check for your OS) and restart your machine.

When people are having trouble with installs it could also be a dependency problem. Make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed and updated BEFORE you attempt to install the software you need it for. Actually this is good general advice anyway, for maximum compatibility and in order to avoid problems with applications written in Visual C++ it is always a good idea to have all the C++ redistributables installed and fully updated. Many programs require them to function properly; one important example is ATI drivers. It is often seen when the installs went bad or were unable to install the drivers because of either missing or not updated C++ Redistributable Package.

  1. I agree with DavidR. about Adobe Reader being a security risk these days, and trying to use other pdf readers instead.

  2. If you wish to reinstall Adobe Reader, you first need to download the newest version, then uninstall the version you have using the vendor’s uninstaller method, then reboot. Then you can install the new version of Adobe Reader and reboot again.

Let us know if and what of the above fixes your problem. Thanks.

Well, this is getting worse. I uninstalled the Adobe and reinstalled without change of the error message. I uninstalled it period and installed the recommended Firefox and was able to open PDFs. Today I attempted to import photos and mini-movies from my Sony camera. It would not load the movies, but I could view the photos. I was unable to view any movies from the Flip camera. This is serious trouble as I do not wish to loose any recordings that I do not have back-ups on. Suggestions?

Have you checked for malware with Avast and MBAM?

What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit? If you have a 32-bit, do an Avast Full scan and a boot-time scan (64-bits can’t do boot-scans until the next version). If any infections come up, put them in the Virus Chest where they are safe. Report your findings in your next post.

If you do not have MBAM on your machine, check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Let us know if you have any questions. Thank you.
