Silent Mode - Avast MAKE UP YOUR MIND! Avast Please Fix this bug.

So I understand that Silent Mode is made to NOT tell you certain things. I always use Silent mode. About a year ago a choice was made that when you scan an item on your computer IT DOES NOT TELL YOU the results of a manual scan. You had to turn off Silent Mode and then scan the file and then turn Silent mode back on.

That was a really stupid choice. If a user says HEY I want to scan something and silent mode is on, it should tell you the scan results of a file.

Now In the last few months, I noticed that with Silent Mode on, we want back to the original way it was before the update a year ago and I was getting scan results even with Silent Mode back on. I figured people had complained and someone with common sense at Avast said, Yes that does not make sense…

Well the latest upgrade for Avast is out again, and NOW ONCE AGAIN I have to turn off silent mode to see scan results I have manually asked for.

This is insane and DOES NOT WORK.

Silent Mode ON or OFF. If a user does a manual scan on a file, it should show you the results. Why would it NOT?

Silent Mode is designed so a users who is surfing the web does not see all the crap that is going on. However, if a user does an action that requires a result, WHY WOULD YOU BLOCK THE RESULT?

Can we please show the result with Silent Mode ON when we do a manual scan of a file? This is honestly a no brainer.

Clearly your Q.A. is missing these things and honestly I am glad they did. But this idea of not giving a result when a users asks for it by hiding it does NOT make sense.

Please return a result for a manual scan with silent mode ON and OFF.

Sad there has been no response to this.

Reported to Avast.

cry4dawn - thank you for your report, can you please specify what exactly is manual scan? Is it a scan run from context menu? Thank you.

Hello. I will let cry4dawn answer personaly, but on my side, this is indeed the scans launched with the contextual menu (right click on files → Analyse the selected items).

I agree with cry4dawn that the system as it is right now is not efficient. I would personaly love to have a window open which shows the progress of the scan and sums up how many files have been scanned and if something has been found or, alternatively, to see a short pop-up in the bottom on the right of the screen which simply confirms that scan has been runned and that nothing has been found.

Each time I download a new element, I launch an analysis. Right now, Avast is not telling me clearly if everything is okay, or even if the scan is done (e.g. if sound is off). It would be very nice to modify this aspect.

Grigs

This is currently being address by Avast. The manual, context scan should indeed
show results even when in silent mode.
" if that was really deliberate user interaction with our app, then displaying the progress/result messaging is fine"

Hello,

When I say manual scan I mean if I have a file and I right click it off the content menu, I then click “Scan Selected Items for Virus”.

If I have Silent Mode turned on, I will NOT get anything as a response even though I have asked for a manual scan.

Before this update if you have Silent Mode turned on, and you did the “Scan Selected Items for Virus”, you would get a result.

Once again, If a user does a manual scan of a file with silent mode on, I am telling the program I WANT TO KNOW. If it tells me nothing, then I have to open the program and turn off Silent Mode, do my manual Scan and Turn back on Silent Mode again. This is a major problem for the user experience.

It was originally this way long ago, then it got changed to the way it is now. Then it got fixed to working with you did a manual scan last major update, and now we are back to it being broken again…

Is it possible to have your Q.A. write a test case to always make sure this feature works with Silent Mode turned on. Seems like it is a miss often and broken and fixed.

So since this was a bug, any updates on when we can see a fix for this issue? How big of a priority is it to fix? This really is a deal breaker for me and ruins the whole experience.

That link didnt say much. When is the fix rolling out to normal versions?

The short answer is when it is ready to come out of beta.

When you consider there has been a fairly regular monthly program update cycle (this one, 19.8.xxxx, would appear to be slightly out of sync with that) I would guess before the end of this month.

Thank you for that.

You’re welcome.

Ok so I have downloaded version 19.8.2390 which had the fix for this issue in it and it clearly DOES NOT WORK. I still cannot scan a file in Silent Mode… what is going on?

Crickets?

Can we please get a comment from Avast on why this fix did not work and when will the next fix be in to fix this issue?

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15

Why would I try the latest beta. I am looking for a retail release. Not going to rip in and out an Anti virus with tons of adjustments made in the software already.

What happen with this fix? Did it not work, and if not is it being looked to be fixed again in a future update?

That is only a suggestion, if you aren’t comfortable using the beta then you will have to await a fix (if it is in the beta) until the regular release.

You shouldn’t have to " Not going to rip in and out an Anti virus with tons of adjustments made in the software already."

You could also save your settings before doing anything - AvastUI > Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting - scroll down to ‘Back Up Settings.’

Not a bad idea anyway (even if not trying the beta) if as you say you have “tons of adjustments made in the software” already.

Either way this was said to have been fixed in the last major update which I have. It clearly wasnt tested well enough and didn’t work. I am just asking what the time frame is on the next update.
