SmartDefrag

I have just downloaded SmartDefrag from MajorGeeks.
My Avast AV has stopped it and placed it in the Virus Chest because it contains FileRepMalware, considered by Avast as being a threat.

VirusTotal shows SmartDefrag as being 100% clean.

Is it a false positive ? Should I install it ?

I am amazed that IObit a reputable supplier, deliberately includes a suspicious file in their popular SmartDefrag program.

Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware found nothing. Why should Avast be different ?

I am amazed that IObit a reputable supplier ......
I dont think evryone will agree on that .....

And there are others doing the same

Thanks Pondus, so our Chinese data thieves are not as reputable as I thought.
On the basis of that I have had my Avast put SmartDefrag back in the slammer and will never deal with OIbit again.
My question - is FileRepMalware a false positive ? Whether it is or not, Avast did a good job.

FileRepMalware = File with low (not many use it) or bad reputation

Use the performans tools that is built in to your windows OS

Registry Cleaners: Digital Snake Oil

Thanks again Pondus - I never clean my registry, only a few known oddments by hand on occasions.

FileRep = File Reputation, is likely in this case to be as having a poor File Reputation. But FileRepMalware is still a poor file reputation, though I don’t know if it would directly be malware.

That out of the way, regular defragmentation of a HDD shouldn’t be required, so much so as to install a program. There is also a defragmentation function in Windows 10 (I can’t recall what OS you are using) and may also be available in earlier versions.

IOBIT and Malwarebytes controversy goes back many years.
They do make some good products. The computer tune-up and defrag programs aren’t part of the good tools.
