Smashed Galaxy S5 with Avast installed - can I remote wipe?

The S5 is smashed, so the screen doesn’t work but the phone turns on. I put the SIM card in an old phone, but when I try to remote wipe the S5 via the web site, it tells me that the phone cannot be contacted. Is this because I took out the SIM card or is this because GPS location is turned off (and I cannot turn it on as the screen on the S5 is destroyed)?

Any ideas? I can sell the S5 for parts, but I want to be sure all my data is wiped first.

Put back in the sim card and try it through my.avast.com

There must be a connection to the device - GSM, 4G or WiFi; in case your device is not connected after the start (or require a PIN) the remote command will not pass through.
