I just downloaded smoothwall and I opened the file. But for some reason when I open it, it opens with my cd burning software. Why do I need to make it into a cd?

Again… Smoothwall can not be your hardware router/firewall if it’s installed in your computer. You need another computer, for example, some old spare PC that you don’t use any more. Then, you fill that PC with Smoothwall, configure it properly, install that computer (now turned into hardware firewall) in between your modem and your primary PC and you’re good to go…
The problem is, as far as I can see, you are totally unfamiliar with those things, and you are running into things without carefully checking them first. I’m trying to give you an advice just to spare you additional problems that you will, most likely have after those actions you already started to perform on your own.
As I suggested in that thread, easiest way for you is to go and buy some of those small router/firewalls, they are pretty cheap. Around 25-35, and even if you want something more expensive, you can pay around 90-120 dollars… depends on what do you really need. D-Link and LinkSys routers are the best of the best, and very easy to install and setup. You have to agree that it would be much, much less expensive thing than going to buy another PC just to turn it into firewall ::). However, that is a very good idea, but just in case you have some spare old computer that no one in your house uses any more… of course, it has to be in good condition, but Smoothwall is not demanding, so it doesn’t have to be some speciall, hi-end configuration… I believe that you can run it very well even on some slower, older systems without a problem…

Routers of this sort are small, about the size of a modem ~ 15cm x 12cm x 3cm; easily set up, and do a good job.
They’re very cheap when you consider what you’re getting, and compare that to the cost of many pay software firewalls.
(If you go wireless, make sure you know how to secure it!)
D-Link and LinkSys aren’t really all that expensive - or weren’t when I bought mine.
Smoothwall is a Linux distribution that acts as a hardware firewall. It completely takes over a computer’s hard drive, so don’t install it on your windows machine. It can also act as a proxy server amongst other things. When you download it, you have to burn the software to a blank CD and boot the computer from it to install Smoothwall.

No, Smoothwall automatically repartitions and formats your HDD. It will overwrite anything on the HDD.

yea thanks, the only reason why I never bought a router was because I thought it would be a couple hundred. Plus I’m a cheapskate because of how poor my family is. I got 23 months of free service from AOL till now because I lied to them and said month after month that I was gonna switch companies. So they say try it out for a month and see how you like the service ;D.

You won’t find these things in Walmart Tim… instead of Walmart, try with BestBuy, Futureshop, Source, etc… try some specialized computer stores, and compare those prices. Sometimes you can find exactly the same product half price down in some other small local store… you have to search to find it…
When I bought mine (in BestBuy), D-Link DI-604, I paid exactly $39.99 CAD, and it was under Mail Rebate action, so two weeks later, I’ve got my $10 CAD back by mail. So, I paid $29.99 CAD… unbelievable price for such a product. In all other stores it was around $40-$50 CAD… so, go and figure… :
