So much spam why?

I’v been to wilders security forums and comodo forums and a bunch of other forums and have not seen them get spammed so much. Why is avast such a big target for this bot spam? Is there a preventative measure they can take that will stop these bots? This forum has been getting spammed all day :frowning:

The spam got so bad that one bot started posting porn everywhere!

I have a question to Avast team. Why you do nothing to stop your forum being spammed?

This morning I’ve reported a bunch of spammers:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=267471 (30 posts)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=253114 (13 posts)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=267519 (2 posts)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=267451 (1 post)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=222827 (1 post)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=265542 (2 posts)

Forty-nine posts in total! I reported every post and you make me wait for 20 seconds before I can report them one by one! Why? Do you think anybody is spamming while reporting spam?

Please, Avast team, do anything to effectively stop spammers. For example, you can grant some Evangelists (with 1000 posts or more) the right to block or to ban spammers.

That guy is nothing, should have seen one night, guy got up to ~100 posts of nothing but SPAM. ;D

You only need to report once for each individual spammer, not every post of the same spammer

They already have that....but they also need to sleep ;)

It looks like a spam bot, but all was taken care of rather quickly considering the number of posts.

As mentioned earlier, do not post to a spammer. Only click the report to Moderator button. If it is a multiple spammer, type “Spam - mult. posts.” Otherwise, type “Spam.”

The spam is rather easy for a moderator/admin to delete all they have to do is go into admin CP and click Delete all posts this user has posted And it will delete all there posts. But the thing is that it’s happening so often around here. I hope that the avast team can implement a proxie detector to block all known spamming proxies ip addresses.

There is more to it than just “delete”. They try to hunt down the IP address and give them a total ban. Therein lies the problem all they (spammer) needs to do is to change IP address. Many spammers use so-called “spam-bots”. avast does use many tools to use against spammers. But this is the price of having such a solid well liked software. In the future just report the issue to a moderator. Only one report per spammer is necessary. After the initial report they can track other posts the spammer has made. Your vigilance is very much appreciated.

When I was (breifly) a moderator of another forum, I used to check the IPs of the spammers with the spambot search tool and I did notice that there was listings for consistent IP addresses/usernames etc. (they also listed other IPs that were used)

As a spammer (or bot) changing IP would (IMHO) defeat the object and slow the whole process down which is what they don’t want…

The way I see this whole spam thing is, too many spammers, too few moderators…

I’d mentioned this before, but what the heck …
Over at one of my medical peer-support groups, any new member automatically goes into moderated status (requiring approval of any and all postings) for the first month or two.

That probably wouldn’t work here, at least not without significant delays, because of the limited number of moderators, but some variation on it might be worth thinking about, since the current restrictions here on relatively new members (i.e., <20 posts) don’t seem to be doing the trick.

I’ve deleted 4-5 accounts yesterday. 2-3 today… I’m tired…

I see the spammer I mentioned in the ECC is long gone…forever…I hope.
Your labors are much appreciated. Thank you.

I feel bad for you. I know how it is trying to combat spammers but if only the avast team would implement some kind of Proxie blocker we would be all set. Maybe avast, could create a new board legend to combat spammers? All i can say really is that hopefully the avast team will read this thread and note how these spammers are affecting the forum. The spamming is getting so bad that these bots are starting to post porn.

We need more people to watch over the forums in the events of attacks like this. Anyway i am trying to give examples of what avast should do but i really don’t know what will work with them. I am hoping this thread will stay alive please contribute to it so the avast! team members notice it.

Sometimes, some of the forum moderators create funny and difficult questions during the user’s account registration to avoid spammer. For instance, the previous Outpost forum(before the upgrade).

I think the moderator can create a new team called"Spam Killer".Those members that in charge for “SPAM Killer” can just remove the spam without the intervention of the moderator.

Have a nice cold beer Tech as you know ya can’t win against the spammers every day

I agree. I think we need such a group very much.
