software integration

A couple of issues I’m unsure about:

Does AVAST integrate with microsoft office?
I know microsoft list Alwil as an antivirus partner - http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp ,
however, when i check an microsoft office program for antivirus integration it indicates that no antivirus product is installed. Are my documents being scanned for macro viruses when i open them?

Secondly, in the unfortunate event that i would need to boot using an antivirus product to scan my hard drives (not boot time scan), what are the options.
I’ve read about the BART CD, seen some suggestions to use avast-dos version and boot using NTFSDOS (can AVAST-DOS and another version of AVAST be installed at the same time?). Is an alternative to use the pro version of avast, boot using NTFSDOS and using the ashcmnd.exe?

would be grateful for any clarification on this

Yes, but using a different method. It’s true that MS Office exposes an API for antivirus vendors, but we found the interface quite cumbersome and not worth the effort. The Standard Shield module in avast (the on-access scanner) takes care of scanning all documents on open, and much more.

No. ashCmd.exe is a command-line program, but not a DOS program (it’s a Win32 console process, like cmd.exe in Windows NT/2K/XP).
In case a clean boot from a removable media is necessary, BART CD is probably the only reliable option.

Alternatively, you could use a DOS boot floppy + NTFSDOS + avast for DOS (but that would require you to be sort of a DOS guru and know what HIMEM.SYS, SMARTDRV.EXE etc. is… :))
