Solution? Chinese character'd programs running in MSConfig

I am having the problem that was described in an old thread. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=69deet8rj0v9ohirrpcnmh84a1&topic=67218.45
(Quick description below.)

The old thread is four pages long, and I have not figured out what it says the solution is. Can someone give the Cliff Notes version of how to smite the virus?

I am still running Windows XP, with the latest and greatest service packs and updates. I use all the Avast realtime shields. (I am currently running a full system scan. Nothing so far, but it will take hours.)

The symptoms are as follows:

In the “startup” section of msconfig, there are two entries with Chinese character names.

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p434/JiveDadson/chinese.png

If I un-check them, then the next time I boot up the computer, I get popup messages during startup complaining that programs referenced from the registry could not be found. The names appear to be the same or similar to the ones that I un-checked.

I have reverted to system restore points as old as I dare use, but the msconfig entries remain.

Please read this section http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 and provide the neccesary logs back here for one of our malware specialists to look at.

Okay. Doing it now.

Malwarebytes came back clean. OTL.tx attached.

OTL Extras.txt attached.

aswMBR.txt attached

Hi did you set the proxies in Firefox ?

Also when you run OTL next, prior to the run re-enable the weird ones from MSconfig (do not reboot) then I will remove them

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Sorry, I do not know what that means, “Did you set the proxies in Firefox?” Was I supposed to as part of this process? If so, I missed it. Or are you asking about what I might have done in the past? I do not have a proxy set in Firefox.

I followed the instructions, and by golly the stupid Chinese character entries are gone! Yippee! THANKS!

There was one small glitch (so far): My default browser got set to IE. No big deal. I have not noticed any other problems, but I have not done much yet.

The log you asked for is attached.

Aye these are the proxies I was asking about - If you do not know why they are there I will remove them for you

FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.ftp - 10.0.0.1 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.ftp_port - 88 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.gopher - 10.0.0.1 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.gopher_port - 88 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 10.0.0.1 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 88 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.socks - 10.0.0.1 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.socks_port - 88 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.ssl - 10.0.0.1 FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.ssl_port - 88

Those are probably left over from when this was my office computer at work. How do I remove them?

UPDATE: Never mind. I found it. I did set those way back when, but I disabled them when I moved the computer home. I just clicked the “no proxy” radio button. I deleted them just now. Just out of curiosity, how could you have removed them for me?

I would have used OTL ;D

How is the computer behaving ?

You would have used OTL. Why does that seem a little scary?

The computer is behaving quite nicely, as best I can tell. But like I said, I have not done much with it. Just cruising the net.

Thanks again. I think I will rest now.

If you are happy tomorrow let me know and I will uninstall my tools

Whoa. You will uninstall your tools? Please explain.

I will use OTL to run an uninstall sequence to ensure that the tools are removed cleanly and safely

You keep saying you will do this and that. Do you have access to my computer?

Nope… But OTL will run the scripts I put into to it…

Which I need to do to remove the malware

Scripts that you put into it? How would you put scripts into it if you do not have access?

In any case, let’s get this wrapped up and finished.

The scripts are the code sections that you copied and pasted into OTL, when you pressed the run fix button it executed those commands

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the “x” and “/”)
then click OK

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.
