Hi angi_,

Yes, you need to remove Norton thoroughly before installing avast!

As it’s a new computer, I’m assuming it’s XP: your first step should be to uninstall Norton from Control Panel>Add/Remove.

You should then run the Norton Removal tool to make sure Norton has gone:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Full SymNRT info:

  1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
    a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
    b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
    c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

  2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
    a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
    Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
    b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
    Click Run.
    Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
    c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
    Click OK.

  3. Boot.

thanks i will try when my subscription runs out in a few days hopefully all will go well

I hope so… we’ll be here to help if you need

angi_,

I addition to the above, be sure to remember to download avast! (but do not install) before performing the above steps. Also, it would be a good idea to disconnect from the internet after downloading avast! and before performing the above steps.

 Hi Angi :

The VERY FIRST STEP is to RIGHT- click the Norton icon in your System Tray,
selecting "Terminate" or some similiar word ( BUT NOT "Off" or "Disable" ) .

i can’t seem to find a terminate or anything like it when i right click even when i go into the options section

 Hi Angi :

SPECIFICALLY, what is the NAME of the Norton product on your
computer ? Include any "Year" if appropiate .

If you follow Tech’s advice, you don’t have to worry about closing or terminating the program.
Removing the program using the add/remove function, will close that portion as part of the removal process.
