I had been using AVG & was told how good Avast was so I am trying it & so far am impressed I just have a few questions. I tried to look for the answers first so sorry if I missed or just did not understand them.
I don’t understand how to activate my e mail accounts ?
I have an AOL & a Yahoo e mail account.
Can someone explain in layman non geek terms exactly the steps to take so that my e mail accounts will be protected sending & receiving e mail ?
Does the Avast on access scanner have to be visable down in the right hand corner to be working ? or like other things if you turn it off in msconfig is it still working ?
I try & keep my system as tweaked as possible & the bare minimum start up items running that don’t have to be.
I assume if you are burning CD’s or DVD’s you need to turn it off the same way you would anything else screensavers, the auto start on your CD & DVD players etc. so not to interfere with the burn.

Only on old systems with a non burnproof burner.
Yahoo is webbased mail (unless you pay for it), files stay on the server unless you choose to download/save a copy of the message or attachment to your local system. Webbased mail does not need configuration by Avast. If you download the mail/attachment, the on-access scanner can take care of it.

Firts part (the blue balls):
You can merge them or hide them with RejZor's AEC tool.
Second part (disabling in msconfig):
Disabling will make Avast (or at least part of it) stop working.
Better is to go to the control panel > add/remove programs > Avast > change/repair > remove all providers from Avast you don’t need/want.
Suggestion: Hava a look at Avast’s help, a lot is explained there in simple words.
So if my ISP is AOL & they are my pay service do I do anything with my AOL E Mail account through them ?
Or like my Yahoo E Mail do nothing ?
Do I not use the mail protection wizard on either one ?
If I do how ?
If you use a mail client the actions you have to take (or don’t have to take) depend on what email client you are using. Avast 4.5 configures many mail clients automaticly.
About icons on system tray, you can see avast4.ini file settings on my signature. You can remove them all and stay will avast! working ok.
I do not recommend the use of msconfig or you will spoil avast installation.
Are you using AVG free and avast at the same time in XP? They will conflict…
I think the best you can do is download the version 4.5 Beta because it uses a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.
