My dad was downloading music, programs, etc without any protection on his computer, so I promptly installed avast!, and the initial scan removed viruses and spyware in the hundreds. It seemed to delete them all without any problems, however, the sound on his computer stopped working immediately after. It’s not something obvious like the speakers are unplugged or the sound is on mute. I tried system restore to before I removed all the problems but the checkpoints couldn’t be used.
I’m not sure if this would cause any of the problems, but the dll files kernel32, winsock, and wsock32 are in the Virus Chest under system files. They are not infected but when I try to restore them to their original location, it says they can’t be moved because they’re in use.
When you installed avast on the computer, avast made copies of certain system files in case they were needed in the future. These were placed where you found them in the System files section of the Virus chest for safe keeping. As you have found out, they are not infected. You can not restore them because the original files are still in place and actively used when the computer is running.
Can you give us a list of the files that are in the Infected files section of the Virus chest?
Thanks for your replies and clarification of the system files section. There aren’t any items in the Infected Files section. Most of the problems found on the computer couldn’t be quarantined or ignored by the scan, so they were deleted. That’s probably what caused the sound to stop working but I’m unsure of what’s missing so it can be restored :-\
