I tried MSE for about 2 weeks and did not like it that much due to a very slow full scan. I cleaned out my registry using regedit (knew what I was doing) and ran ccleaner and ran the avast uninstall utility. However when I downloaded Avast! (most typical configuration) & have not updated it yet, it comes in at 177 mb in my add/remove. Is that normal? It seems like a LOT of space taken.
Edit: I remember my previous topic so i’m just wanting to make sure this is normal and it is not something I had misconfigured:)
The new virus definitions work differently from the old 4.8 VPS in that it isn’t packed, this makes scanning faster but takes up more space.
There is also another difference, take a look in the defs sub-folder of the avast5 folder and you may see multiple folders that equate to a virus definitions version, as a new update is done it creates the new folder and builds the new database. This is almost identical in size to the old one with the exception of the newly added signatures and the old version folder remains in place until avast does some house keeping.
So there may be two or even three versions until cleaned up, see image. This is entirely normal.

Is this done automatically? I wonder if once I have two or more definition folders, it would be ok to remove one.
Yes it is done automatically and no you shouldn’t try to manually remove them. Not that you could without disabling the self-defence module, it may have unforeseen consequences. It isn’t a big deal (excuse the pun) for the HDD space to fluctuate and unless you are really tight on HDD space not really a problem.
