Standard Shield Exclusions Verdict

I got the reply to the E-mail that I sent to avast! Tech Support.
They stated that the Default Exclusions for avast! Standard Shield provider are:

  • *\Win386.swp (MS Windows virtual memory)
  • *\System.da? (MS Windows registry - System hive)
  • *\User.da? (MS Windows registry - User hive)
  • *.txt
  • *.log
  • *.ini

And with the above being the same exact ones I told them were in MY avast!, they said there was NO Problem. They’re OK. They didn’t comment on why other people’s avast! had varying supposed Default Exclusions in there.

The first one is for Windows 98/Me…
The second and third are registry/user ones. I had no problem keeping them both on XP/Vista.
The other three, ok, they’re there for me… I just thought I have add them manually and they’re not by default. Thanks for the info.

This gets better and better, I don’t think anyone knows what are the default settings.

It seems to change every time someone asks and certainly bears no relation to what are on peoples systems.

David, what the relationship with the picture attached? ???

I don’t know but given time I’m sure I will find one ;D

OK times up, it must be on the wrong topic ;D

I have found the post it should be on and its there as well so I don’t know what happened there.

I have never seen the first item listed by Chim “*\Win386.swp (MS Windows virtual memory)” in any install of Avast on XP platforms - ?:\PAGEFILE.SYS appearing instead.

I note that Chim is using Windows 98SE so perhaps the default varies depending on what operating system Avast is installed on, and perhaps it also grows some additional entries when the program or system is run after the install.

Win386.swp is the old PAGEFILE.SYS in Windows 98 if I remember correctly.

Tech,
Yes that’s my recollection too, which is why I suggested that the “default” may depend on what operating system Avast finds during the install.

I think when avast! Tech Support replied to my inquiry, they answered it from the standpoint of my particular system description to them. I HAD though, additionally tossed at them our speculation here on this Forum, that the Default Exclusions probably varied depending on the system configuration. But, they obviously opted NOT to take the time to address that theory.

Hi!

I started a thread about this topic 2 months ago for Win XP:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=36090.0

And we have this thread that started a week ago and was in a way ‘conclusive’
for Win XP:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37418.0

And now we have this current thread for Win 98:

I totally agree with the conclusion:

This must be OS dependent.

Tech; In the first thread you stated 4 entries in your system, but I don’t know
if that has changed by now. Time changes…

Take care.
