start up problem

hi guys
sorry if this isn’t in the right place, wasn’t sure where to put it >.<
a few months back i had a virus that a lovely member helped me get rid of - i think a recovery console was installed on my pc by the helper - (just checked it was essexboy  )
anyway, long story short - the last week or so when I am starting up pc I’m getting a black screen with the message: microsoft windows recovery console do not select this [debugger enabled] and ms windows xp professional (which is highlighted) and then after 3 seconds my pc starts fine with no problems.
i’m just wondering why this is happening now? after so long? is it safe…should I be concerned?

It was always there but as it is for a short duration you probably never saw it… However, once you do see it then it really sticks out

Ok right click my computer and select properties
Select the advanced tab > Start up and recovery > settings
Remove the tick from time to display operating systems
OK out and reboot

hiya essexboy!
sorry for late reply, but I forgot to mention in my previous message that prior to the recovery console message - I had removed a couple of programs from starting up (pc was running slow!) using the system configuration. So is it normal for the recovery console message to be there if you’ve adjusted settings at all?
I also received this message (see attached) and checked the box to stop it from showing up every time, but now I’m wondering if I should do a system restore? Or will that make things worse?

Nope that is a normal popup when you disable something with MSConfig

But there is a small programme that does the same but is much easier to use https://web.archive.org/web/20131106030702/http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

ahhh ok, thank you! (i’m such a noob) >.<
so you don’t think I should do a system restore?

Nope, install the startup control panel, reverse the changes you made in MSConfig
Reboot and use the startup control panel to manage your startup entries
