I’ve told the bloody thing to do a manual update on the program and auto on the defs, but as usual, it doesn’t listen. I want V9 as V10 breaks SSL E-Mail/Thunderbird communication - ie., makes a third party do my security.
ANYONE know how to stop this?
To answer your question, Avast has taken a stance that they are going to update your program whenever they feel like it. If you have it set to manual and it is updating then that is being forced from Avast.
There was a long thread about this already with some passionate responses and even though it goes against all logic to ignore a user’s preferences, they are evidently going to keep doing it.
Really bad position for a company to take but Im not trying to start the discussion again… just saying it’s really piss poor.
I think Avast is great but this one item is really bad IMHO…
Here is one of the threads…many others. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=165102.0
Avast “claims” if you are on “supported” last release of major version they will not force upgrade.
For V9/2014…that is 9.0.2021…your subject says 9.0.1…perhaps you did not get the .2021 upgrade and when V10 came out and since Avast quickly pulled all V9 updates you were stuck on 9.0.1…just a guess.
However, even with the Avast promise you’ll see in thread link they said they will not guarantee it will not happen.
Like @dprout69 says…Avast is going to push the new version, force an upgrade AND reboot your machine when they feel like it. Of course this absolutely floors me since we are not talking about some ancient version…but rather one that until late Fall of 2014 was the thing they were pushing (V9/2014). Anyway, it is terrible position…but it is what it is…sadly your choice is to accept or change to another A/V. Perhaps the latest release of V10 will stabilize/fix the major issues…but forcing it down users throats is not the way.
There’s was lots of discussions about this just last year about Avast force updating to the current release. Some users understand some don’t. At this DNA age threats spreads rapidly and comes in all forms of detection and antivirus companies needs to be on top of them in detecting malware. Antivirus should be kept updated not only just VPS updates but also the program itself. Program updates improves better protection and provides all sorts of bugs/fixes that were discovered.
To those users who have outdated Avast program such as version 6,7,8, or 9 and slowly and slowly these versions are being upgraded to the latest version of avast 10. At some point avast will stop support for out-dated avast program and when the support stops so does VPS updates and when VPS updates doesn’t come in which then equals to high risk of malware infection causing havoc to your computer and destruction.
If you don’t like Avast just move on and get a different antivirus such as AVG Free Edition 2015. Uninstall avast via add/remove, use avast uninstall utility and run it in safe mode. Install AVG, update it, and do a manual reboot.
Also make sure your Thunderbird is up-to-date and have your thunderbird setup correctly as Eddy mentioned.
I’m assuming that you use TB and Avast are in the minority of people for whom this works. I have been searching for weeks and, the only thing I find is people bailing from Avast. So quit your useless posts of " …setup Thunderbird correctly …".
IF you are SO smart and aren’t posting just to up your post count - tell me OH great one how to set TB up.
