Streaming Updates

Question… if Avast is streaming updates continuously… then why do we get the other updates when the version number changes and the box pops up? What’s the difference?

The standard updates have non-urgent signatures added to the streaming ones.
Also, they consolidate all the immediately streaming downloaded since last full update.
Only the ones who enter in the CommunityIQ receive streaming updates.

There are people who don’t have permanent internet connections, or for various reasons can’t or don’t want to use streaming updates. They either rely on manually updating the VPS at a convenient time, or updating from a file downloaded via another PC.

I don’t think this is the case. Streaming updates are still received even when the Community participation box is not ticked.

I have a permanent connection and receive streaming updates all day (enable streaming updates is checked). I still get the pop up updates though a couple of times a day (automatic update is selected).

So from what I see the answer is non urgent updates come via streaming? Urgent updates come via popup?

NOTE: To receive Streaming updates, requires that you have the virus definitions update set to auto.

I would have imagined it would be the reverse.
Urgent updates come via streaming and non-urgent ones via the VPS update.

You are correct but once a VPS update is released it is ALL packaged into the VPS update (meaning those previous streaming updates are also included into the VPS). This also helps Avast do the housekeeping of the virus defs.
