[Suggestion] A new rrranking system

The current system gives ranks based on post amount. This is fairly exploitable, just make a bunch of “+1!” posts and you’re an Evangelist. I suggest the system to be based on actual posts usefulness. Have a +1 and -1 button near each post. Each post can be rated only once by one person. Each good rating adds some points to rank, each bad one - decreases…

This bun fight has been well covered in the past, the problem being the forum software doesn’t support any rating of usefulness as far as I’m aware so we are stuck with an artificial numerical value.

Even if it were possible as to who or what ranks a posts usefulness, if you base it on the forum users clicking a ‘I found this post useful’ button in the post. Then you fall into another trap, where some people don’t bother clicking it at all and those who click everything.

Regardless of the ranking they are still clocking up number and unfortunately some people just see the number of posts and not that what they have said is of worth or not, but they think it is based on the number.

There are some very experienced and knowledgeable Newbies or Junior Members, as their forum ranking has no bearing on their personal experience/knowledge, yet their posts are very good, but they may be infrequent visitors to the forum.

So it isn’t a simple matter to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Actually, there isn’t any benefit if you are an evangelist other than getting access to a Evangelist thread that is usually deserted.

So, I guess it doesn’t matter, atleast for me.

I think no matter how much post you have or how much stars you got since i am and a lot of experience here start with one post, and i know my self so nothing will UP me or down me,BUT i think if the big players here should give smaller players good or bad ranking and those smaller give smallers…
Ofcourse they couldnt apply that here.

Rank doesn’t matter. When I need help, I’ll ask.
When I’m able to give someone help, I’ll add my 2 cents.
Rank doesn’t really matter to me.

This is exactly the old and outcast karma system (even the word k a r m a can’t be written :)).

I agree. So I’ve asked for a reserved board to discuss things technically.

Good idea and there is a spare board called “Off Topic” which could be scrapped in favor of your suggestion.

Like Bob, “rank” means nothing to me, either.
All it does is provide an indication as to who the longest serving and/or most prolific posters are.
This is recognized by most members of forums, generally, and post count really only means much to the kids.
It is what is within a post offering help that counts; something someone of average intelligence can hopefully work out without encountering problems. Quality tech advice can be from someone with thousands of posts, or someone with just one or two.
(Just as rubbish can come from someone with thousands of posts, too.)

So start a Thread and start discussing things technically.
Nothing is stopping you.

Meanwhile, back in the pulpit…

How much evangelising do the “Evangelists” actually do?

For myself, the appellation, “Senior Member”, would curry more respect.

The word evangelist (used here) stems from this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_evangelist

But like has already been said, rank and post count are not necessarily important. The content of the posts are.

And there was I, thinking it more along the lines of:
