I am sorry if this is not really quite appropriate for this forum, but I am just trying to see if anyone has had a similar situation to this. I just got an unsolicited phone call from someone (East Indian accent) claiming to be from “PC Mechanic” and that Microsoft notified them that I have a number of error reports logged on my computer, and he asked me to get on my computer for him. He said my system has been corrupted. I was very suspicious. True I do get a lot of error messages and for whatever reason my Windows 7 every several months has been doing horrible things until I get to the point that I have to reset to the system image discs I made a few months after setting up the computer, but never in all my years on a computer has anyone from some third party called me “at Microsoft’s request” to resolve the problem. I really did not trust him, and so I told him without Microsoft’s notification I would not do whatever he wanted me to do. After a brief argument about it, he hung up on me. Does anyone think this is suspicious? Wouldn’t Microsoft have their own technicians call me about my problems if they were going to? And more pertinent to this forum, if it was phishing or something, how did this person get my number…I have Avast Internet Security. Am I safe from stuff like that?
Hi Dondi1,
This is a scam. They phone you up tell you about your pc is reporting virus issues and MS want to help…
This is a lie. They want to control your pc and then charge you a stupid amount for virtually nothing.
It has been going on over here for a long time now, and unfortunately people still fall for it.
The best thing you can do is tell them that you don’t have a pc and hang up.
Scott
Or do what I do and ask them to hang on while I flash it up - and then go and have a cup of tea and read the paper - they soon get bored ;D
Probably one of those iYogisolutions1 guys trying to make more money!
You can also ask them to send you their offer via email, together will all the details,
with a return phone number and, you’ll call them back after you’ve had your computer
security expert look at the details. ;D ;D
Bet you don’t get the email.
