Please use common terms if you can help me with this, (not real tech savvy).
I am using: XP Media Center Edition, 2002 sp3
Sorry about the double post, this one will notify me, the previous one will not.
Thanks
Welcome to the forums, wdoc.
Information about advpack.dll :
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/advpack/19231
It is possible that some type of malware has effected this dynamic link library.
Please download HijackThis from the link below. Do not download HJT to the desktop but instead download it into it’s own folder on the hard drive.
Run the program but do not make any fixes and then post the log results using the “copy & paste” method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted.
OR, you can post it as an attachment to your post by clicking on “Additional Options…” below left of the posting box. Someone will review your log and then offer help.

Thanks for the help, the HJT log is attached.
An analysis of your HJT log shows the below entries as possible problems :
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
[the above entry is a deactivated entry that can be fixed. the entry belongs to McAfee Site Advisor. Perhaps you once had this and have since uninstalled this tool bar?]

O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} -

Hi Charley, I appreciate you helpping me out!
I use McAfee, provided by my Comcast provider, I don’t think I ever uninstalled this or Real.com either?
I have been and am still involved with a couple of schools, so these likely are legit, but I can’t tell from the names?
Another detail that slipped my mind and I now realize co-ensides with this error messages appearance; when I start up occasionally (and today) my Start button and that whole bottom line menu is frozen, all I get is a big fat error sound if I click on anything on that line, all I can do is a hard shutdown and then restart and things are usually fine???
Hopefully this makes some sense to you and raises the correct flag.
Do I need to curtail my web activity if useing secure sites, school, purchase etc, I need to do some things today but??
Thanks again!
Try following the directions at the below link to see if you can reinstall this dll.

Thanks Charley,
This would have been very helpful, but I didn’t see this until today, it ended up in my Junk folder. I eventually did find the .dll file on the net. Although I see now that I didn’t do the prescribed method of installation as per the more informative site you suggested, my stumbling did work well enough to then download and reinstall sp3 from MS. I got in touch with McAfee prior to getting that fixed to reinstall my protection and they insisted I dump all other virus preventatives, their stuff still wouldn’t load and they just left me hanging with nada. Sent me to my computer manufacturer, who could get me back to a replica of the drive 2 yrs ago when purchased, wiped of data, and it would only take 2 to 3 weeks? WHAT??? Sent me to MS phone support who wouldn’t even address the question without paying for the privilege, the MS on line help, guaranteed a reply within 24 hrs, but never replied at all, 96+ hrs and counting. Unbelievable, I need to understand this stuff a little, a lot better and be more careful, realizing you are largely on your own. So I did eventually figure out what to do to get rolling again, I’m surprised I didn’t think of it earlier, chalk it up to stressing instead of thinking, live and learn. I know I explained enough to all these people that they should have been able to easily send me in the right direction had they a clue or actually cared about being helpful. People like you really are providing a much needed service making these stressful incidents much less painful, and are promoting the mental health of your fellow man; you are another breed entirely.
Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it!
You are welcome. glad to have helped, & glad you for it working correctly again.
Hi Charley,
I still have an issue, it seems to me to be important. I can’t load one MS update: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB961260), from digging around it seems whenever you fix your system (like I did replacing the missing .dll file) problems are created causing errors with loading updates. I am most of the way there because everything else updated, with this one exception, I don’t think it wise to do without this however.
I don’t know if this is relevant or I mentioned to you; my Word 03 became suddenly incompatible with Outlook for some related reason, I just upgrade to Office 07 and that seems to be working fine now.
These are some of the information windows that were initially available;
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x8007F0F1
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB961260)
Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
How to Uninstall
This software update can be removed via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
I have been looking for information and solutions and (see web site) although this is not exactly the scenario it is possibly the closest, (or I’m way off) in my limited understanding. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/943144
If you can shed any light on this and/or get me pointed in the right direction I’d appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill
