System restarts....

When avast checks for viruses and the TV tuner program is running system restarts with no reason… I use an ATI All-in-Wonder Rage 128 Pro with the latest drivers installed. This problem occured out of the blue without me doing any system wide changes (at least none that I remember of)!! Does anyone have an idea why this happens and what I should do??

PS: I also use the ZoneAlarm Pro firewall… thx!

Sounds like a hardware problem, e.g. caused by overheating the computer (CPU, memory, …). Or, does it restart always at the same file/folder during the scan?
What is your operating system, btw?

It always happens while searching the ATI support folder. Could it be a graphics driver virus?? I’m using XP Pro SP1.

No, it doesn’t seem like any kind of malware.
If you scan the folder alone, using Explorer Extension (i.e. rightclick on the folder and choose “Scan …” from the context menu), does the restart occur as well?
Check the Windows\Minidump folder, please - does it contain any recent files? There should be one file for each restart…

When scanning the folder alone the system stops responding… (mouse and keyboard freeze) even when nothing is running. I found the files in the minidumb… what should I do with them??

I dont think its overheating cause my motherboards utility reports normal temperature just the moment before the restart!

Well, if the problem occurs only when scanning this folder (and nowhere else), it’s really suspicious. A possibility would be that the disk or filesystem is somehow corrupted in this folder’s area.

You can try to send the minidumps to vlk@asw.cz, with a short description of the problem.

If it is due to filesystem coruption wouldnt a scandisk help fix this problem?? More specifically the problem occurs when scanning a .cab file in this folder…

How big is the CAB file? If you copy the file to another folder and scan it there, does the problem occur again?

It’s 16 MB. I copied it in a new folder and avast checked it succesfully!
