This just started today and I do not know what to make of it.
When I hover over the icon or go into the interface, is says my system is secure. Yet there is a red circle with a white “X” over the system tray icon that would make you think something is wrong, like no internet connection or your system might be unsecured.
Am I correct in thinking that when there is a problem, you get an orange triangle with a “!” when your system is actually unsecured? I always get the “X” when I start up my computer since it has to wait for the cable connection to be acknowledged. Then the “X” goes away and it starts looking for updates.
But the updates have been done for a while and I even tried looking for new updates. That doesn’t seem to be the problem. Is this just a passing error that will go away if I restart my computer? I don’t want to restart and find I have a virus that was hiding.
What does the avastUI show when you left click on the avast icon ?
There is a bit of a delay when the avastUI (tray icon) is first displayed on my system where the red X is over the icon, but it quickly goes away.
The Yellow triangle with ! is that one or more avast shields or elements isn’t running or out of date (virus signatures, etc.) or disabled. Again you should open the avastUI and see what Shield or element is flagged.
Well, left click opens the Interface and it opened to where I last left off, so I switched to the summary. The only things that shows up on the summary screen are the following:
“Silent / Gaming Mode is Turned Off.” I turned it on, no change. I turned it back off, no change.
There is also an ad for 50% off Avast Internet Security upgrade. And a small link at the bottom having to do with news about adding reputation analysis to the upcoming 6.0. I have no desire to upgrade, but I did click on the link for the news. It just opened a website in my browser, so no change to the icon.
However, I can tell you now that the problem seems to have resolved itself… for the moment. I will explain what I did.
I simply turned off all the shields, choosing the 10 minutes option, and then immediately turned them back on. For a few seconds it stayed with the “X”, then it changed to the “!”, and then everything went back to normal.
I don’t know if this means it was simply a bug where the “X” was there from the beginning when I started my computer and just never changed over, or if it was something else that caused it.
I think we can add this to the list of bugs to be worked on.
I don’t know if it would be included in bugs to be resolved or I would expect to see lots more topics relating to this. Whilst it isn’t unusual to see the red x for a few seconds shortly after the avast icon appears, it should clear quite quickly.
If it does happen again on a regular basis - Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You may need to reboot after the repair.
I have a somewhat similar situation on my computer. I recently purchased Avast Internet Security. It is up and running, and when looking at the summary, it states Secured–Your system is fully protected. All shields are up and running. But when I pass my mouse cursor over the round icon in the desktop tray, there is always a message that states “avast! Antivirus: WARNING, your system is UNSECURED.” Why does it state this? I can’t find anything out of the ordinary. ???
I have also have this problem. Win XP SP3, IE8, and avast!Free 6.0.1091. Last day or two I noticed X’d tray icon, normally on when booting but this time it stayed X’d. Hovering over icon gives “avast! Antivirus: WARNING, your system is UNSECURED.” Left clicking icon goes to title page which says SECURED and shows 5 green circles. Rebooting twice did not change status. There is no exclamation mark in the tray icon. Windows Security Center says everything is OK. Is my avast! working correctly? What’s up with the icon?
