System won't boot after Avast free update

Hey folks,

I run Win 7 with the free version of Avast. I generally keep it up to date. Yesterday I was on the PC for the first time in a few days and noticed the engine needing updating. I did so, but then upon reboot the system never gets past the Windows icon. I tried booting into safe mode, same thing, except that it hangs after aswRvrt.sys.

I do have Comodo installed, if that is relevant.

Any suggestions? I tried loading the Windows repair tools but that is hanging too!

Hi and thank you for the prompt response. I created the Reatogo CD and booted from it, and just after it goes to a Windows loading logo, it bluescreens (twice in a row now).

Suggestions?

Wait a bit, I’ll PM Essexboy…

I took a picture of the blue screen, if it would help, but I am on my phone, and it won’t let me attach it to my post, because it’s too large. But honestly, there’s not much information in it.

Just wait a bit…

What code does the bluescreen give ?

In the technical section it just gives me a hex code of sorts. If you can PM me am email address I can email it to you…

Is there a stop code like 0x000345 or similar

0x0000007b

OK that indicates an inaccessible boot device. Do you have the recovery console installed on this system or the windows CD. If not I can give instructions to create a windows 7 one. But I must know whether it is 32 or 64 bit. You will need access to another computer to create it

I have a recovery cd. It is 64 bit.

Incidentally, I tried booting with the windows cd and repairing but it froze right on the screen where I should be able to click “repair”.

That sounds like a hardware problem to me… How many disc drives do you have in the computer

Three.

OK unplug all disc drives except the master with windows on and then try a boot

So, that is exactly what I was trying, and now it boots.

So I guess it’s a just an amazingly well timed hardware problem??

If it booted after the drives were removed then one is bad, if you just fiddled with the connections then one was loose
