I’m just throwing this out there in case someone has any ideas. I’m thinking I’ll have to just reformat, but I’ve been putting it off.
Before making the very smart move to Avast! (at the suggestion of my son), I was using Norton Internet Security/AV. (Hope it’s okay to mention other companies on here.) It was working fine, UNTIL I updated to what was then the latest version. I think it was 7. Anyway, when I updated, it caused all sorts of problems. So, I decided to delete the program. I followed the removal instructions through Norton, but it appears it didn’t remove everything. I tried going in and deleting through “remove programs,” but even though it’s listed there, it says “module not found” when I try to remove it. And the recycle bin and the Norton Protected Recycle seem to still be connected, although the “unerase” for Norton bin doesn’t come up.
Since then the following do not work on my computer: can’t print certain e-mails from Outlook (others work fine); Windows Media Player doesn’t work, even when downloading it again; windows “search for files and folder” doesn’t work; and when I try to load “system restore” it doesn’t come up. I do remember when I was going through the mess when I was trying to upgrade Norton, that I was using system restore then, although it didn’t help. There are other weird things, but nothing I can’t work around.
Does any of this make any sense? Doesn’t to my uneducated mind! Just seem like random things aren’t working, or aren’t working correctly. I’ve managed ways around the things that aren’t working, which is why I haven’t gone through the arduous task of reformatting yet. I don’t have a “copy” of my hard drive from back before all of these problems, and it’s probably useless to do it now while it’s messed up.
Computer was 100% fine before the Norton fiasco.
Again, I doubt there’s anything to do but reformat (or live with it as I have for over a year), but just thought I’d toss the problem out and see if anyone had any other ideas.
You should not need to reformat your computer. You should try the removal tool for your particular version of Norton. You can find it at their website or search the forums here for a link to Norton/Symantec removal tool.
Hey, CharleyO, thanks so much for the welcome, and the suggestion!
I thought I tried that at the time and it didn’t work, but I tried it again just now. What happens is I get this message when I try to use the removal tool:
“The following program was found on this computer. Must be removed through “Add/Remove Programs” before Norton Removal Tool can proceed.” The program is lists is “Norton Utility 2002 or earlier”.
And then the only choice I’m given is to exit.
The one program shown in “Add/Remove” is Norton Internet Security, and when I try to remove it, it says is can’t because the module can’t be found.
Going in through MyComputer, I see two programs: Norton System Works and Norton Internet Security. I can’t delete the main Norton files here either. When trying to delete NSW, it says it can’t delete “ndrvex.dll” because access is denied. When I try to delete NIS it says it can’t delete because “SetEvtHp.dll” access is denied.
Yes, Tech, this will be another adventure for me, but I’m willing to try it, if I can. After the fiasco with 7, Norton reimbursed my money, and I later tossed the software (in anger, I must admit!). I know my husband has Norton stuff somewhere because he has it on his computer, but I can’t find it at present. Does it matter what year? Will it let me install it on my computer, when he has it on his?
EDIT: Oh, forgot to ask. I read that if you delete Avast!, everything in the chest is gone as well. I just put about 6 things in the chest in the last two days. Since it’s suggested to wait a week or two before deleting items from the chest, should I wait a week or two to try this process since in involves deleting Avast?
The chest contents will also be removed, if you wish you could extract them to a temporary folder (the suspect on you created and excluded would be fine).
I can’t recall the ones you put in there if you refresh our memories file name original location and malware name we may be able to say if early deletion would be an issue,
Tech, I don’t have the 2007 one that was an upgrade, which was the one that messed everything up. I don’t think I have the one Norton Removal is saying it finds on the system, which is “Norton Utility 2002 or earlier.” So, it sounds like I’m out of luck on this unless I can install something on the system that was already there? I’m not sure which version/year is still partially hanging around. Assuming it’s the “2002 or earlier,” but I’m not sure.
DavidR, there are 12, not six. (My memory’s shot, I guess. Either that or I can’t count!) All of them were put in the chest 11/7/08.
I think extract this one - I would suggest uploading it to virustotal for scanning.
atgpcext.dll — C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files — Win 32:Trojan-gen {Other}
I think you can get rid of all of the others without an problem the mywebsearch is no loss even if it wasn’t just a questionable search helper and I think we have pretty much confirmed that winlogin.exe is bad.
Tech, taking a big stab in the dark here since I don’t have any of my old Norton software. (Note to self, don’t throw away old software!)
NRT says it can’t remove anything because it detects a 2002 or earlier version and I have to remove that first through add/remove programs.
Add/remove show NIS, but it won’t remove it because it says the module isn’t there.
Under Program Files it shows NIS 2007, and NSW 2003 (those are created dates–properties)
If I get a cheap version of 2002 NIS on Amazon, install that, and then remove with Add/remove programs (following your earlier instructions)-----? Thought since “2002 or earlier” is what appears to be keeping the NRT from working—
Or, going through Program Files and manually deleting either everything that it will let me delete, or anything dated 2002 and before? With my limited amount of knowledge here, just thought maybe getting the earlier stuff out might allow NRT to work.
Apparently, there is no NRT for anything earlier than 2003.
You can try this one I believe it also does earlier versions than 2003, assuming it is still available.
The NAV 2003 removal tool can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe right click on the link and select save as or save file as (depending on your browser) and save it somewhere on your hard disk where you can find it later.
IF all the various “Norton Removal Tool(s)” fail to completely remove Norton,
then I recommend you look into using the FREE “Revo Uninstaller” from www.revouninstaller.com .
