temporarily turning off AVast to uninstall a program

I tried to uninstall a program, which couldn’t be completed because Avast was running. It was recommended to turn it off to complete the uninstall, but I [sheepishly] don’t know how.

what program is that?

Does it matter what program? He wants to turn the program off, how does he do that?

It certainly does. There shouldn’t be any reason to turn of avast! or any other security program.

I’m not sure I understand why you would think that someone should not be able to turn off a program he has running on his computer.

However, it sounds like he has a very good reason. He wants to install another program and Avast! will not let him. So how does one turn this program off?

I suggest you let him post his own question.

He did.

Yes, it does matter.
You should never disable the antivirus for nothing, neither installing nor uninstalling other software.
But if you want to do …t, then do it temporarily.

Because you feel that your program should not be turned off is irrelevant. A person should have the option to turn off any program he has running on his PC. Why is there no way to stop this program from running?

What Tech showed you is the safest way to do it.

You can temporarily disable the shields or, you may uninstall the program.
It’s designed to protect your computer. If you can simply shut it off at will, then it wouldn’t be much of a security program.
Please stick to your own thread instead of the one you hijacked.

No he does not…he wants to uninstall a program
so i am curious to what program that need avast to be off so it can be uninstalled. ???

My bad, fixed…

So?

So how does one turn this program off?
if you stick to one topic and not jump around......you find the answer. ;)

I’ve only had one topic, How do you turn it off?

this is not your topic…the answer is in the one you started

Gosh, thanks for such fast reponses, you guys. The program is turbotax2010. I no longer need it. I normally don’t have trouble installing anything with Avast running, but when I tried to uninstall using the control panel, I got a message saying the “directory” was full, and to turn off Avast, which might finish the uninstall. The uninstall had proceeded to its finish when the message appeared. Is this helpful?

The following instructions from TurboTax should help you get rid of a failed uninstall:

Thanks. It occurred to me last night to go to Turbotax’s website for just such a solution. I’ll let you know if it works.

See reply no. 7 IMHO to turn off any real-time/resident protection is foolish at best.
Protection is the real reason you use avast, isn’t it? ???
