Test Memory Problem. Safe to Delete Registry Entries For Old AV Software?

I love Avast! 4.8 Home. So far the only problem I’ve had has been with “Test memory during application start-up.” When I first installed Avast!, my system would stall after every memory test and I had to reboot until I finally found the setting where you can turn the memory test off. Now everything is working normally and I would like to turn it back on but I’m afraid to.

I suspect one of my previous AV programs is causing this problem. I’ve had Norton 2008, Webroot SpySweeper and Norton 360 which was a trial version. I used Norton’s removal tool, and uninstalled SpySweeper with Add/Remove Programs, then searched and found all residual files and folders and deleted them.

But today I searched my Registry and found several files and folders associated with Symantec/Norton and SpySweeper. Does anyone know if it should be safe to delete them? I would like to get all remnants of both off my system but I’m not that familiar with how the Registry works and I’m afraid I will do more harm than good. I can post more details if necessary. I have Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 1.

Thanks!

It’s difficult to say what is and what is not safe to do with Registry.
After using the removal tool, avast should work. Can’t you try?

TweakNow is one of the safest registry cleaners I’ve tried. Only delete the “safe to clean” items, which will appear in green.
If you re-enable the memory test on startup, does it always stall at the same file?

Thanks for that Tarq57. I might try TweakNow, but I did turn “Test Memory” back on and everything is working normally. I guess my system just needed some time to adjust. I should be able to back up my registry before making any changes so if something does go wrong and can always restore it.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m really liking this software. When I had Norton my memory usage was consistently 50%, now it’s down to about 30%.

Just a quick update. After looking at and trying several different registry cleaners I finally settled on TweakNow. It got rid of all the ones I was wanting to get rid of plus about 150 others with no adverse effects. Thanks for the tip!

You’re welcome.
Ccleaner, by Piriform, is also considered a safe registry cleaner, with additional disk cleaning abilities. Very popular.

Hi Norel

I found this link for uninstalling all traces of Symantec/Norton:

Will try to find one for Spysweeper now…that way you won’t do anything harmful to your registry…Lori

Posted as an Underline instead of a link.

Thanks, Tarq

I realized that and corrected it…not very “techy” myself, but love to learn and pass on anything I do…I guess he will need to figure from that which download he needs though…will check back with what I find for Spysweeper…nice of you to tell us of a program you feel is a safe registry cleaner…they scare the daylights out of me (lol)…Lori

…and here is Spysweeper’s own official removal tool:

Hope it maybe helps…i see they also reccomend a registry cleaner of some sort too, but wouldn’t hurt I guess to just at least try and get rid of old traces of it by their uninstall tool…someone else on that page was having a hard time removing all traces, too…Lori

Yeah, me too! Borked half my programs once, and had to reinstall XP because I let a reg cleaner do its thing. I've found the very occasional problem with Ccleaner, none (yet) with TweakNow, one thing I should point out is that I haven't that much experience (nobody has) with the current version of TweakNow - it is fairly new - so a certain amount of caution is advisable. Backing up the registry before making changes is important. If a change made prevents Windows from booting, though, the backup is generally unable to be used. Erunt is an excellent backup (and auto-backup) tool.

Regarding the Norton Removal too, MajorGeeks also host it. It’s the same tool supplied by Symantec. The various options on the page you linked (I think) refer mainly to what users of particular products who might want to later re-install them should do, rather than different versions of the tool.

Good link, Tarq! (and much less confusing than the Norton removal link I posted)…I saved yours for future reference…why I love surfing the forums!!!
