The option to not install chrome is there as the link from Pondus will show so i guess you missed it but it is a shame that avast are leaving these boxes pre ticked by default
Some Tips that should always be followed when installing something new to your computer:
Always create a System Restore Point
“Start → All Programs → Accessories → System Tools” or,
Type sysdm.cpl into the Run Command window or the Windows Search Box
Always select the Custom (Advanced) method for your installation
Almost all installations offer 2 options:
Standard (or Easy or Express) or, Custom (or Advanced).
Always select the “Custom (Advanced)” installation because this type of installation affords you full control
over the installation. If you don’t select the custom installation, you’ll not be able to select or change various parts
of the installation and it’ll install the software with preselected configurations.
FYI: To those who believe I missed the Op-Out box, There was none. Check the link that Pondus provided and you’ll see what I mean! More strange, when I turned on my PC the next day, the screen with op-out box appeared out of nowhere!
To disable Chrome as your default browser…GUI>Settings>Troubleshooting> untick the Chrome box. 8)
Wit all due respect Chrome doesn’t take up “that” much HDD space. I keep it to check/verify for avast bugs concerning Chrome.
“To disable Chrome as your default browser…GUI>Settings>Troubleshooting> untick the Chrome box”
Maybe I’m wrong but shouldn’t you tick that box if you don’t want to use Chrome??? Your talking about the settings in the avast UI correct??
BTW I also got that pop up about finishing the installation of avast this morning when I turned my computer on. I didn’t change a thing from yesterday so I don’t know why this appeared,I always uncheck the add chrome stuff but why is this even appearing.
Hi All
I can’t find anything that addresses my particular problem with this google chrome nonsense. (Why did avast do that? I hate it when updates try to give you an unwanted toolbar but I thought avast had more class). When it first appeared I unchecked the boxes then clicked finish thinking that was the last I’d see of it. It’s appeared again everyday and sometimes twice since. I’m worried I’ll accidentally click finish in an unguarded moment and also get tricked into having an unwanted toolbar that’s going to waste my time getting rid of. Can someone tell me how to prevent this ‘update’ keep appearing please? Thank you
I started having this problem with the SmartPhone advertisements. They would not go away, and I don’t have a smart phone! One more issue with Avast and I am switching to Microsoft Security Essentials.
The post you quoted was answered with a question which just might resolve your problem if you are on 7.0.1451 then do a manual program update > avastUI, Maintenance, Update - Program Update.
I’ve used Avast for about five years now. After constant glitches with other security systems-Avast was a breath of fresh air! No problems (touch wood!).
Until now. Sadly it appears we have to ‘suck up’ the new aggressive marketing trends. Avast is becoming more pushy on that score.
I never took my free version for granted. I am still grateful. About the ‘but’?
I’m having the same problem as many here,-I accept the marketing-I’m getting a free and efficient system, but this?
Every logon: there it is; a window telling me to click finish to "Complete your Avast software update.
I’m a born cynic so I looked carefully…and (in my case)-there it was: the tick to install Chrome.
Every login for 4-5 days now, I’ve unticked Chrome and clicked Finish.
WHY is this happening? What purpose can it possibly have except to…er, ‘encourage’ Avasters to click Finish without looking…?
It is tacky. If this is just a ‘bug’, then why the Chrome option which has to be DEselected? Clever little bug isn’t it?
It obviously took a marketing course!
This is annoying enough for me to look for the Avast forum/register/post.
I’ll look at the advice given above (I have version '51), and will do what I have to.
But many with more texpertise than myself will simply bin the system and get something else.
Avast? This is not your finest hour, let me tell you.
