The AAVM subsytem detected a RPC error

I’ll try to be short. Tried FAQ, tried many times uninstall/reboot/install in many modifications but my avast still won’t start. I even tried to start the avast service manualy and it says error 1053. it all started after update. any help would be greatly apreciated, cause i think it is realy great program. oh i forgot, i can check for viruses manualy but my resident scanner doesn’t work.

i have a win xp pro with sp1. anything else i should tell you?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
RPC error is generally related to other antivirus present or, at least, firewall blocking. Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Anyway, RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Had AVG. Removed it before starting Avast. Have Zone Alarm. I am not too good at computers. Need all the help I can get .RPC what does that stand for ? Sorry .I will try.

Hint: There is a search function on this board, that really can be helpfull if you want to know something.

(i was rude here ;D)

don’t have any other antivirus or firewall on my computer neither i did have. nothing like that at all. the thing is that it worked fine before update. i tried install/boot/unistall/boot/install/boot/uninstall/boot/install even repair… and it’s the same. and i dont find any log files to show you some useful stuff

find it… in log viewer in error icon it says Error in aswchestC:chest open error 1753 and
aswchestinterface - program error descritption : cchestlistview::loadfiles() chestopenlist() failed: 2147422219
aswchestinterface - program error descritption : cchestlistview: oncreate() !m_strerrorwnd.isempty().

Did you installed Avast while logged in as administrator? (not as user with admin rights, but as true administrator)

haven’t tried that. i’ll report back in 10 min.

everything is the same. it wont start. even in administrator mode. any other suggestion?

The way I see it is that you don’t have the correct rights to read/write to the chest folder.

What is causing this?
Several possibillities, imo :

  • No (sufficient) read/write access to that folder, restricted by user/group policy
  • Damaged installation of Avast
  • Damaged OS
  • Disk errors
  • Other software interfering with the proper operation of Avast

ok tnx, so now i remember that i played around with the ownership in advanced security and sharing options. i’ll see what i did wrong:) tnx for the help!

problem solved. it had to do something with the permissions. i was checking out what permisions do users have on my c: drive and then i gave all of them full control (system, admin, everyone etc) and now it works.

tnx guys for showing me the way to look for the trouble.

bye

I know, I know, I am just greater than great ;D ;D ;D

Hint: Search is always the first thing I use, but it’s not helping me now, although it did point me here. I’m a first-timer user, got the RPC error, and I still do not know how to fix it–after much reading in this forum. I’m trying to leave AVG, but I can’t w/o something to replace it.

Right now, Avast is DOA–and is beginning to look like it will not be the replacement, although I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about it. Permissions aren’t fixing the problem for me–and why should Avast be so difficult as to require more effort/tweaking when other software works just fine with everything as is? Yes, I am administrator and installed as such, but nada. (And now back to reading for a few minutes. Another five minutes and I’m moving on to other AV software. That said, I am always very grateful for people who give hints. If only the hints helped. )
