This morning Avast Professional 4.1 detected Win32:Trojan.gen(VC), in a system restore file.
Perhaps overzealously, i deleted this, without even trying repair etc options. This was based on previous experiences where such actions proved ineffective - i pursued a scorched earth approach instead.
After this, IE and MSN messenger would connect to my broadband internet, only to crash closed almost instantly.
Booting into safe mode, i started a full AV system scan. Halfway through, i realised i had not cancelled system restore, so changed this and returned once more to safe mode.
However, this time i was unable to start the AV; after memory scanning, the program “starts” and instantly disappears. This is the same as IE and MSN.
I have used Avast cleaner, and symantecs stinger, neither of which detected anything.
I have used spybot and ad-aware, which have not found anything unusual.
I have used hijack this, the progressive prunings of which are shown below.
System restore is no longer an option, as the previous records have been deleted (i guess this happens automatically?).
Restoring full contents of the recylce bin, ever previously emptied, had no effect.
This is all on a new rig, with fresh install of legit XP Pro. Sygate and avast were installed before first connection to the internet, and absolutely all updates are installed (inc SP2).
Attempting to be comprehensive, i think i might have created the longest ever single post!
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME. I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING TO DO. I AM DESPERATE, AND WILL EVEN PAY FOR ADVICE THAT LEADS TO A SOLUTION!!!
