My PC has a Windows Vista Home Premium operating system with an Internet Explorer 9.0 browser. I am using the free Avast Home Edition antivirus program. When the antivirus database tries to update itself, I eventually get the following notice: “The package is broken.”
Asyn, following your instructions, I get an avast! Antivirus Setup dialog box with a white X inside a red circle. It states “Error processing packages. Please use full update.”
I’ve tried using automatic updating and it does not work.
I would start with what the avast message is suggesting - download the full antivirus database.
Full virus definitions update, https://www.avast.com/download-update - ensure you download the correct one for avast 2014 or avast 2015 version, 58.3MB.
Save it to your hard disk and run it when complete.
Asyn, following your instructions, I installed the new Avast antivirus program (Version 2015.10.0.2208, Release date: July 11, 2014).
I was surprised when the program notified me that it needed to be immediately updated.
When I tried to update, I got the following notice:
Last encountered error: Host unreachable
Engine and definitions: Already up to date (current version 141107-0)
If the program is telling me that it is already up to date, then why did the program request an update?
The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32-bit.
There is no other security related software installed.
I cannot recall the name of the previous antivirus program. It was a popular program that abandoned free versions for a 100.% subscription model. Years ago, I reported the name on an Avast registration; so if Avast keeps records, it will be there.
Today, the program requested to be updated again. After clicking “Update,” I noticed a progress bar extending to the right, so the program appeared to be downloading data. Then I received the same notice as in my message above.
I do not understand how the Avast antivirus program can contradict itself.
Asyn, following your instruction, I get the same result. Overall progress goes backward (i.e. overall progress drops from 25.% to 1.% and then the cycle is repeated) except this time the file is named vps_32-f87.vpx.dld
Are there settings that I can change on my copy of the Avast antivirus program that will facilitate downloads?
Why doesn’t the Avast update program provide the file size and a full URL address for the file to be downloaded so that dial-up internet users can use a download manager to download updates that will take hours?
Or is the Avast update program incompatible with dial-up internet use?
