Thief has become suspicious of outgoing texts from Avast

I had my phone stolen 3 months ago and Avast has recently sent me messages saying an non-trusted SIM card has been inserted. I’ve been tracking the phone location and calls over the past few days.

The problem is, the thief is using a PAYG (pay as you go/prepaid) SIM card and so the texts I’ve been receiving have been costing them money. They’ve only been using the phone for incoming calls and so became suspicious when they ran out of credit. I eventually got a call from them asking who I was and why their phone was sending multiple texts to my number (they must have checked with their phone company). They’ve now changed the SIM card but my question is - if the SIM card has no credit is Avast essentially useless? Or is it able to use Wi-Fi/3G to communicate?

Hi,

Anti-Theft in version 1 can use only messages. If you check the beta part of the forum, there is a beta of version 2 which can also use Internet connection to do all its stuff. I understand it’s not going to help you much at the moment, it’s just the way it is.

It would be nice to have option to track only on WiFi as well. This way you don’t cost them anything and essentially you can capture their home IP address menaing you can estimate their location or even report them to the police who can then use this to contact ISP.

It works like that in the new beta. It’s not getting the IP, but it might be a nice feature, I’ll try to suggest it and see where that goes

Thanks for the swift reply Filip.

But recieving their public IP adress only shows the location of their ISP, atleast here in Sweden…
AT could (and does) scans for WiFi networks in the area and map them on google map according to info from Google…

we already track Wifi networks and improve our GPS measure by this values.
