Thorough wipe not working

I installed Avast on a rooted sk17i running Android 4.0.4 build 4.1.B.431. I made sure Avast was device admin and thorough wipe setting was 1. Then I texted myself the command WIPE and everything was deleted and a factory reset was done.

When I scanned the sdcard using some recovery software I found a whole lot of everything intact and recoverable. I tried it one more time and the stuff was still on the sdcard. Is it supposed to be like this? What could have gone wrong?

did you get back confirmation SMS? what did it contain?

It said wipe would begin and in the paranthesis it said avast was admin.
