I would ask you by IM but I think the question could be useful to other users besides me.
Nowadays, there are a lot of antitrojan and antispyware programs available to download and use.
I know I can check if a program is a legit antispyware in the Rogue webpage. I know I have reviews all over the Internet…
I know that layered defense is better than a single program.
Do you think avast + ewido are enough for detection?
Which other combination do you suggest?
Thanks.
Of course, other users, free discussiong about antitrojan and antispyware + avast 8)
Using avast and ewido - really good combination and I think it gives not bad protection level. All other my FREE computer security suite is shown below
I have been cleaning a lot of machines with Avast+Ewido.
I must say that it is almost the same that use kaspersky… After using both, is hard for any other security software find something… Lets say, after 10 computers cleaned with both, only one machine still have one (never more then this) malware to be cleaned.
Using webshield with some proactive configuration as the file blocker of standard shield, the number of infection in my clients falls down greatly as I never had before…
But I always prefer to use ewido as on demand only…
Using avast! of course and what i have on my profile below, has kept me safe and secure since i’ve had this notebook,i must have a little overkill to some.
My retail spy sweeper and ewido full are the only realtime protection and the rest are just scanners and it seems to be working fine and the In/Out firewall definitely helps on protection too, plus the wep and spi firewall i have on my wireless linskys router ;D 8) have a good one avast! world
Of course, "prevention" is 1st priority, therefore, I use
SpywareBlaster & SpywareGuard from javacoolsoftware.
com .
Use "Cookiewall" from analogx.com as "cookie manager"
and "Traceless" for daily cleaning ( CCleaner, CleanUp,
& possibly the "new" ATF" are alternatives ) .
NOTE : I would NEVER use, knowingly, a BETA product, &
that inludes the popular "Windows Defender" .
In addition to Avast & Ewido, the only antiSPYWARE
program I have is Ad-Aware ( surprise, surprise ) .
Currently, I have 3 FREE Registry cleaners & trying to
decide about using the latest, Eusing Free Registry
Cleaner.
I have my Internet Options > Security settings according
to the recommendations of the Editor of Spyware
Weekly Newsletter .
In fact, the three ones have, in my experience, much less detection than a-squared and the best of them, ewido. Of course, I can’t talk that much… so I’ve asker Spiritsongs more info. The reviews and comparisons on Internet are off-dated or are not independent (they’re just trying to sell me a product… :P).
You’ll be surprised if you test them with ‘real’ infected files… I deeply concern about their hability to detect anything else then the very common spywares…
Me too… I’ve received a Pro license of it because I’ve translated it 8) ;D
Recommendations of the Editor of Spyware Weekly
Newsletter which I do NOT disagree ; there were 2
I thought to be overly restrictive, as did Senior Member
of the Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals “Mitch” :
"Open Internet Options from the Windows control panel and click the “Security” tab.
Highlight the “Internet” icon and then click “Custom Level”. Choose “Medium” from
the drop-down box at the bottom, then click the “Reset” button. Click “ok”, then
click “Custom Level” again.
Set your options just as I have listed below:
.NET Framework-reliant components
Run components not signed with Authenticode (Disable)
Run components signed with Authenticode (Prompt)
ActiveX controls and plug-ins :
Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled) (This actually refers to Java and Flash,
not ActiveX)
Miscellaneous :
Access data sources across domains (Disable)
Drag and drop or copy and paste files (Prompt)
Installation of desktop items (Prompt)
Launching programs and files in an IFRAME (Disable)
Navigate sub-frames across different domains (Disable)
Software channel permissions (High safety)
Userdata persistance (Disable)
SpiritSongs, is there any place that we can get ‘confident’ (trustable) detection rates comparison of these products?
For instance:
The Best Spyware Detector
PC Magazine 10.31.05 "WebRoot's Spy Sweeper 4.5 is the most powerful anti-spyware tool we've seen yet. Its Comprehensive Removal Technology attempts to remove spyware completely in a single pass, and its behavior-based Active Shields prevent the installation of new threats on the cleaned system. Fancy names aside, our testing shows that the utility really works."
If you use Ad-aware or SpyBot you will be surprised just how more effectively SpySweeper detects and protects your PC from Adware, Spyware, Trojans and other malicious products. It's also one of the few anti-spyware programs that can reliably detect rootkits. Try the free evaluation copy of the new Version 4.5 and see for yourself.

There is probably some trustworthy site to get
antispyware detection rates, but RejZor would probably
know . I giiggled a little when I saw your Oct 05 quote
from PC Mag advocating Spysweeper; nowadays a Senior
Editor of them is advocating Spycatcher on their Discussion
forums. Got me intrigued, so I installed their free "Express"
version; updated & ran their "through" scan and it
"reported" I had 4 major infections, which I knew was
false. Just to check, I ran a Windows "Search" which found
nothing.
I just go by the "opinion" of the webmaster on the aumha.
net forums ( free & pay-for-it antispyware programs have
about the same detection rates ) & spywarewarrior's
Eric Howes on which ones are the best .
As Bob commented. I do wonder if the recommendations
from the various PC-related magazines are "tainted" by
ad revenues !?
