Too many warnings

Strange one this, I receive a warning with each site/link that contains the word “downloadsoftware4free.com” in the link. That is using Google and it is the same with 28,900 sites.
The Avast pop-up shows “VBS:Malware-gen”
For example:
http://avast-professional-edition.alwil-software.downloadsoftware4free.com/

Any ideas?

Hmmm… your browser seems to be hijacked…
I suggest (specially step 6):

  1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest AVG or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

This is not a site you want to visit and surely not a site you want to download from.

Thank you Tech for a most detailed investigative procedure.
After going thru the steps, I’m running most of those progs, I found nothing.
I then contacted a friend on another continent also using Avast and asked him to do a Google search with “downloadsoftware4free.com”. Same result, all sites identified with VBS:Malware-gen.

I’ve decided to add “*downloadsoftware4free” to my filter list inside Webwasher and will therefore no longer come across this site.
Maybe guestlogin just closed off the issue. I really do not need this site as I have enough other sites to obtain to the same info.

I can’t get any warning from Dr. Web to that site… although I’m not surprised that avast detects it as infected… Maybe other users could help you get clean (if you’re not) if you post your Hijackthis log.

You can get HiJackThis from Tech Support Guy’s “Security Help Tools” sticky if you dont have it already.
