Tray Icon

Ive just updated to the latest Home Edition version, and now it takes up to 10 mins after a reboot for the on-access icon to appear in my taskbar? this also happens to the resident protection it always reverts back to disabled when I launch Avast Antivir.

Win 98se, 512 ram, XP 1800.

Any Ideas, Cheerz

98 or 98se? What else is loadig at boot time? (start, run, msconfig) Are you sure your system is clean and does not have virusses, spyware, adware, malware? http://members.home.nl/edeijl/acred/cleaning.htm

Already removed Avast and reinstalled?

Its Win 98se, I did uninstall the older version and this one a couple of times. I used spybot and adaware before re-installing and CWShredder. Msconfig :-

Fixed It, but had to re-install win98se, must of been somethig in the registry.

These two items from your previous post could possibly cause a conflict and the slow (10 minutes for the on-access icon to appear) boot.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NPROTECT] D:\Utilz\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [NPROTECT] D:\Utilz\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE

And as you said “must of been somethig in the registry,” these are registry items.

Using msconfig you should have been able to stop them running at startup.

They give an indication that you previously used Nortons Anti-Virus and either you didn’t uninstall it or the uninstall failed or was incomplete. These are hopefully now gone after your re-install of Win98se.

I’m not so sure David… Maybe he had only Norton Utilities and not NAV.
The Recicle bin protection adds that driver (if I’m not wrong) and it can live with avast ::slight_smile:

You are right Technical I have Norton Utilz installed.

Sorry if my post caused any confusion, I don’t personally use any Norton products and thought Norton Utilities included the AV program.

David

No Probs David, While I had the problem any help was gratefully received. What I meant to say earlier was that the Nprotect is a function Norton Utils uses on my Recycle Bin.

DazP, I think your problem (tray icon) is not related to Norton Utilities…
I have them working with avast in a XP and in a 98 system without trouble.
Can we start again? I mean, can you post your problem, error messages and environment… I’ll try again but now I’m a little confused…

Technical, Cheerz, but I solved the problem by re-installing windows. Its working ok now.
