Trojan in pagefile.sys

I did a complete scan of my computer yesterday and Avast found a trojan horse in pagefile.sys (image of message attached). When I clicked on “move to chest” I received a message saying that I had insufficient HD space to do this.

I then downloaded Kaspersky’s online scanner, and scanned pagefile.sys. Kaspersky said “no malware found”

Could this be a false positive? Google gives quite a lot of references to pagefile.sys, most of them concerning Avast.

pagefile.sys is usually excluded from scans, unless you’re scanning from a separate partition.

Yes, when it is scanned, it does seem to generate a lot of false positives.

If scanning memory and scanning other files on the disc produces no warnings, it’s probably safe to ignore the detection.

Add this to the Program Settings, Exclusions, Add and enter ?:\pagefile.sys, the ? is a single character wildcard so the ?:\pagefile.sys would exclude the pagefile.sys file no matter what drive/partition it was in.

Many thanks for your replies. I’ll follow your advice and put the file on the exclusion lists.
