After acquiring the AIM bug, my computer was running slow and after running my Anti-Spyware it sped back up. I then proceded to run Avast and it found two viruses ( both Win32:Trojans ). I then tried to delete these but a message popped up that said, "An error has occurred during the processing of your results. What should I do? I’m running Avast Home Edition 4.6, version 0541-1.
The virus is “Win32:Trojan-gen. {UPX!}” and im using Windows XP.
The virus was found in “C:\Program Files\Common Files\system32.dll\gui.exe”.
Give us some more information (couldn’t resist it) ;D
- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
- What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)? - What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?
Windows protects files and processes in use so scheduling a boot-time scan from within avast if you have XP, NT, w2k will do a scan before windows opens or reboot into safe mode and run a scan from safe mode.
Whilst browsing or collecting email, etc. if you get infected then the malware by default inherits the same permissions that you have for your user account. So if the user account has administrator rights, the malware has administrator rights and can reap havoc. Wit limited rights the malware can’t put files in the system folders, create registry entries, etc. This greatly reduces the potential harm that can be done.
Check out the link to DropMyRights (in my signature below) - Browsing the Web and Reading E-mail Safely as an Administrator.
To clean a system from malware (and protect it against) follow the instructions in the malware removal section on this website: http://mrspock.dsmirc.co.uk
Check out this thread as it refers to the same virus and location http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=16746.0
