I want to give another AV a trial, probably MSE. Can I turn off/disable AVAST somehow or am I better totally uninstalling ? Ideally I’d like the option to go back to AVAST if i don’t like the new AV.
Been using Avast happily for years but I found its become too slow and bloated, particularly at start up where it seem to take ages to load and stops other programmes loading. I’ve tried the ‘disable avast until other services have loaded’ option but it made no difference. Have got an XP machine so maybe Avast has got too advanced for it, it used to be much quicker with earlier versions.
Pretty sure it is Avast. After a 2 minute pause at my desktop, the orange globe eventually appears, then everything else loads. Task Manager shows AVAST as the major active programme during that time - but I’ve still loads of memory free. Seems to have got slow since the last programme update. I do load Google Chrome and Utorrent at start up , but this never used to be a problem, they now take ages to load.
Uninstalling AVAST is the only way I’ll know for sure. Or guess I could try not loading Utorrent/Chrome at start up, but why should I have to do that…
This does not sound like it’s avast. Especially since you have avast set to load other services “before” loading avast.
When was the last time you used a cleaner like CCleaner? I would try CCleaner before jumping to a conclusion which may or may not be correct.
When I start my computer in the morning, Malwarebytes Pro came first after 30 seconds and Avast Internet Security only 5 seconds after. So, I don’t think that Avast can be blamed.
What would you prefer, a slower boot with a more advanced AV, Or a less advance AV with a quicker boot?, Advanced meaning, Avast updates it’s definitions twice a day, with updates that could be crucial for new and meaner Malware, I could go on all day but it’s entirely up to you, whatever floats your boat.
I might well do, but am giving MSE a go. No registration , no constant prompts to upgrade to a paid version. So far I’m impressed how quietly it sits in the background and takes up little resource. I dare say Avast gives more protection but it depends on where you go and what you click on on the interweb, and I’m a very cautious kind of person. Avast was good and I kept with it for 9 years, but its become a bit over the top for me, it used to be a very light application. On a couple of occasions it gave false positives which left me in trouble, but I guess all AVs can do that,
Might give V8 a go when it comes out. Hopefully it’ll take up less resource and be less intrusive.
