Turning off Avast!

I got the free version to try it out. Installed fine, but I wanted to turn the program off. I could not find any option that would let me turn it off. So I called customer support, told the guy my issue. He told to use the disable option. I told him I did not want to disable it, I wanted to turn it off. He suggested that I use the Task Manager to turn it off (seriously?). I said I tried and it would not let me. He then hung up on me. I tried to call back, but just listed to elevator music for 10 minutes. I ended up unistalling it through the control panel. Even then, part off it seems to still be running as the symbol is still availible on the bottom right side of the screen.

Why would you make a program that can not be turned off?

And your customer server people suck.

No, disabling a program from doing what it is programed to do and stopping a program from running are different things. How does one stop this program from running?

Disable - still active, not doing is function.

Off - Not running.

If I turn a program off, I need to go into its file folder on my hard drive (or short cut on my desktop) and start it.

When I disable Avast, it’s icon is still active. The program is still running. edit - I can see the program listed in the process tap of my task manager.

An antivirus is a complex software: it requires Windows services, drivers loaded, etc.
There is no turn off to them, unless you turn off the whole computer.
Disable is the better you can achieve.

Oh, if the icon is annoying, remove the icon… And enjoy the most configurable antivirus round…

I’ve tried out a number of security programs, I’ve never had one that could not be turned off. Other than a computers operating system, I have never heard of any program that will not let its user stop it from running.

Where is your evidence? You do not list any antivirus software that feature a “turn off” system. Even if they did, I’d assume they would act like avast!'s disable feature.

Regardless, it is inconsiderate to completely “stop” an antivirus in the first place.

My evidence? Two of the top of my head are Kaspersky and AVG. No, they act like normal programs and stop running. And inconsiderate? How can you be rude to a program?

Isn’t the reason of installing an antivirus to be protected by it? Why would the average user want to completely “stop” the antivirus?

Surely disabling the AV is safer than “stopping” the AV.
