Two quick and simple internet/wi-fi related questions

Hi there. I just have a few quick and very simple questions. I believe I already know the answers to them (they’re pretty elementary technology-wise), but it would put my mind at ease if I knew for sure… Forgive my lack of knowledge and mild paranoia about such things. I couldn’t find the answers to these questions on the net, so I thought it might be okay to ask here at Avast.

  1. It’s NOT possible for a device to wirelessly connect to the internet without your permission, correct? You have to set up a network connection manually first, right? Or has this changed with the newer, “smarter”, technology? I don’t want my devices to randomly connect to some unsecure network.

  2. How can you tell if a device (TV, camcorder etc…) can connect to the internet/has wi-fi? Some devices I have don’t mention anything about internet/wi-fi, so it’s safe to assume they don’t have that function, correct? I ask because my relative is a bit worried about being hacked/spied on and she would prefer to buy wi-fi-less things, like TVs, if she can prevent it. :stuck_out_tongue:

A simple “yes it can” or “no it can’t” answer will suffice.

Thanks in advance!
Best regards.

  1. No … you usually have to turn WiFi on, select where you want to connect, then a password

the smarter tech would be this , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Setup

  1. Userguide

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

EDIT: Never mind, found the answers to my questions.

there is pleny info if you google … what is xxxxxxxx

Haha, I know. Sometimes I can’t fully understand the explanations I get, or can’t find any explanations at all. I’m not good at searching google apparently. ???
… That or my questions are too specific… Anyway, that’s why I ask here sometimes. I like to get more specific, simplified answers. Plus, sometimes I can’t find the answers to my questions.

That said, I do get too “question happy” sometimes.

Anywho, thanks again for your help.
Have a nice day!

google has a solution for that also

Hahaha, thanks for the link. I never thought of searching for search tips, go figure. :stuck_out_tongue:

But anyway, my original questions were answered, and that’s what I wanted to know most.
Sorry for getting too question happy after that. So much for “two quick and simple questions”…

Thanks again, Pondus.
Best regards.
